Questions that appear in the table of contents (linked directly to the outline) are also called inline questions. Inline questions often follow a topic and may test comprehension of the concepts linked to the topic or evaluate proficiency with specific procedures.

Depending on the question type, users may be required to select one or more answers, type the answer text, click an area of a graphic, or select matching items. Users can select the Do Not Know option if they do not wish to guess. If questions are being tracked, selecting Do Not Know counts as an incorrect response.

When creating questions, you should use the question's Associated Content property to link it to the module, section, or topic on which the question is based. Setting the Associated Content property provides the following advantages:

Question Remediation
Remediation provides feedback after the user answers a question. In the Developer, authors can set the type of question feedback for each question. Feedback can simply indicate if the answer was correct or incorrect, show the correct answer if the user answers incorrectly, display remediation text fully explaining the correct answer, or provide a link to view the remediation. See Remediation Property in the Question Properties section of the View Document Properties chapter for more information about remediation.

Your decision to include remediation for questions may depend on your deployment method. It is a good idea to provide complete remediation as a learning tool. Users who answer a question incorrectly are highly motivated at that time to know why their answer is wrong and understand the correct response. The correct answer, along with remediation text with a reason why the answer is correct, and a link to the content on which the question is based, provides an opportunity for a memorable learning event and reinforcement. However, if you are tracking user responses in the Knowledge Center or an LMS, you may want to refrain from providing remediation for pre-assessment or inline questions until the user takes a post-assessment so that you can compare scores and gauge the effectiveness of your content.

When content is deployed through a Knowledge Path in the Knowledge Center (available in Professional edition only), a pass Passed or fail Failed indicator appears next to the question in the table of contents after answering a question.

Note: In the Professional edition of the Knowledge Center, you can choose to honor the question remediation settings from the Developer or override these settings with another remediation option. You can also override assessment remediation settings.
