You can add custom bullets to a bulleted list style from a package or from a file on your computer. You cannot link or embed a bullet from a URL.

Custom bullet images from packages are linked, which means that you can easily update the images in the style sheet by updating the package files. Custom bullet images from your computer are embedded, so if there are changes to the image, it must be embedded again.

Note: If you add custom bullet images from a package file, you need to consider where to store that package. Packages stored in the System folder are not included as a related document for duplication. This means that if you duplicate an outline and include the style sheet in the duplication, the package with the linked bullet images is not duplicated and the duplicated style sheet links back to the original package. For this reason, you may not want to store packages linked to a style sheet in the Style Sheet folder, or in any of the System folders.

Style sheets support the following graphic file formats for custom bullets:

Custom bullet images are added to the bottom section of the List Type list, and remain on the list until you delete them. For accessibility purposes, custom bullet images, either linked from a package or embedded, should be decorative only since you cannot apply alternative text to the image in the style sheet or when it is used in a bulleted style in a web page.

Tip: If you use icons in your documents for notes, tips, and warnings, you can create a bulleted style for each icon. For each style, create a single level bulleted list style, add the icon as the bullet image, and format the text as desired. You can also add a text background color and left indent to the style for additional level formatting.

Delete Custom Bullets

Embedded bullets remain embedded in the style sheet until they are deleted, even if they are no longer referenced in any style. On the other hand, custom bullets linked from packages are automatically removed from the List Type when they are no longer referenced in the style sheet.

You can choose to delete one or more embedded or package bullet images with the Delete Image option on the List Type list. When you delete an embedded or package bullet image, the image no longer appears in the List Type list. The image is removed from all bulleted list styles in the style sheet and replaced with the default image for that list level. Deleting a package file bullet from a style sheet does not delete the image file from the package.

Note: Embedded images are immediately removed from the list when you choose to delete them. Package images remain on the list while the style sheet is open; however, they are removed when you reopen the style sheet.
