As you type in the Web Page Editor, the text reflects the default formatting. You can use the toolbar icons and controls above the main window to change the formatting for text, lines and images. This type of formatting is called direct formatting, to differentiate it from formatting that comes from style sheets. See the Use Styles to Format Content chapter for more information on style sheets.

You can use either content defaults or style sheets to preset some of the text formatting defaults. If you choose to use content defaults, the formatting of web page text results from the web page default settings in the Options dialog box, direct formatting that you apply to web page elements, and defaults inherited from your browser. If you choose to use style sheets, web page formatting is controlled by the default and non-default styles that you create, defaults inherited from your browser, and direct formatting that you apply.

Note: You can apply a default style sheet or set content defaults in the Web Page category in the Options dialog box. Any changes to content defaults only affect new web pages you create after the change. However, you can link a style sheet to existing web pages so updates to the style sheet update all documents linked to that style sheet.

ProcedureTo format text in a web page:

  1. Position the cursor at the location on the web page where you want to add text.

  2. Type the text.

  3. Select the text you want to format and use the appropriate toolbar options.

Note: You can also select some formatting attributes before you type the text. Other attributes apply to existing text only.
