The Sound Editor toolpane is used to manipulate the sounds associated with each frame of a topic or a web page. The Sound Editor toolpane is made up of a waveform and a toolbar.

The waveform is a visual representation of the shape and form of the sound signal. You can use the Sound Editor controls to locate, select and edit, all or parts of the sound in the waveform.

Note: When you edit sound for a topic, the Sound Editor toolpane displays a temporary sound file made up of the current frame and the sound from the previous and next frames (if they exist). When the file is saved, the sound file is stored as three separate sound files.

Import Sound Opens the Import Sound dialog box for importing sound into the current frame or web page.

Export Sound Opens the Export Sound dialog box for exporting sound from the current frame or web page.

Record Sound Launches the Sound Recorder - Record Sound dialog box to record sound on a frame or frames or on a web page.

Insert Sound Opens the Sound Recorder - Insert Sound dialog box in insert mode so a new piece of sound can be added at the insertion point without overwriting any existing sound.

Play Plays the sound from the beginning of the waveform or from a selection point if one is selected.

Pause Pauses the playback of a sound file. Once the Play or Play frame buttons are pressed, they are replaced by the Pause button.

Play frame Plays the sound from the beginning to the end of the current frame. This icon does not display when editing sound on a web page.

Stop playback Stops the playback of the sound file.

Cut Cuts the selection to the clipboard and removes it from the waveform.

Copy Copies the selection to the clipboard and retains it in the waveform.

Paste Inserts the copied or cut selection. The selection is inserted at the cursor or replaces the selection.

Delete selection Deletes the selection in the waveform. Deleting the selection reduces the timeline of the waveform. This is grayed out if nothing is selected.

Select frame Selects the current frame in the waveform when editing sound on a topic or selects the entire waveform when editing sound on a web page.

Deselect all Deselects any selection set.

Set start of frame sound Allows you to adjust the start of frame sound. When the icon is clicked, the cursor location becomes the new beginning of the frame. Any sound to the left of the cursor becomes part of the previous frame. You can also adjust the frame sound start position by dragging the frame start marker. If no previous frame exists, this button is grayed out. This icon does not display when editing sound on a web page.

Set end of frame sound Allows you to adjust the end of frame sound. When the icon is clicked, the cursor location becomes the new end of the frame. Any sound to the right of the cursor becomes part of the next frame. You can also adjust the frame sound end position by dragging the frame end marker. If no next frame exists, this button is grayed out. This icon does not display when editing sound on a web page.

Crop to selection Removes all sound that is not selected and replaces it with the selection. Frame markers are preserved when cropping sound in a topic. This button is grayed out if nothing is selected.

Zoom When editing sound in topic, this menu contains three preset zoom levels (Zoom to Current Frame, Zoom to Previous and Next Frame, Zoom to Selection) for zooming in the waveform. When editing sound in a web page, this icon zooms to the selection set in the waveform. The icon is grayed out when nothing is selected.

Modify length or amplitude This menu contains options to extend the timeline, add silence in the waveform, and adjust the amplification of the sound level.

Sound Tuning Wizard Opens the Sound Tuning Wizard for adjusting the playback and recording volume.
