The Topic Editor provides several tools for controlling which bubble text, frames, screenshots, and action areas appear in published content. The following summary includes a brief description of each tool and the resulting output.

Note: See the corresponding help topic for each feature in the Topic Editor chapter for more complete information.

Visible in See It!/Try It!  Visible in Do It!  Visible in Know It? Specify the Play Mode for Custom Text
Use the Visible in <Play Mode> feature to control the play mode in which text appears. Text marked for a specific play mode is included when you publish a Player, Presentation or document that uses that play mode. Text not marked for the play mode is excluded. This feature is commonly used when you want to display different information in different outputs. See Specify the Play Mode for Custom Text in the Edit Bubble Properties section of the Use the Topic Editor chapter for more information.

This option affects Player, Presentation, and document output.

Example: You have two paragraphs in a frame bubble. You want the first paragraph to appear in the Player, but do not want it to appear in Do It! playback or the Job Aid. To control the output for the paragraphs, you select the first paragraph in the bubble and enable See It/Try It! modes and disable Do It! mode. When publishing, make sure that Do It! is selected as the Job Aid text mode.

Visible in Player  Visible in Print Control Text for Player and Print Output
Use the Visible in <Player/Print> feature to prevent custom text from appearing in the output, regardless of its play mode. By default, custom text is marked to appear in both Player and document outputs, but you can disable an output. Text that is marked to not appear in a Player output does not appear in a Presentation output. See Control Text for Player and Print Output in the Edit Bubble Properties section of the Use the Topic Editor chapter for more information.

This option affects Player, Presentation, and document output.

Example: You have two similar notes in a frame; one is worded for onscreen viewing in the Player and the other worded for document output in the Training Guide. Both notes are marked for See It/Try It! modes. To control which note paragraph is included in which output, you select each note and enable the desired output and deselect the other output. However, when publishing documents, make sure that your text mode is set to the same play mode as the custom text.

Hide a Frame for a Play Mode
Use the Show In feature to prevent a frame from appearing in a specified play mode. If you hide a frame for See It/Try It! mode, then the frame does not appear in any Player, HTML Web Site, or document output published for that play mode.
Note that using this option overrules other frame and play mode controls during publishing. See Hide a Frame for a Play Mode in the Edit Bubble Properties section of the Use the Topic Editor chapter for more information.

This option affects Player, Presentation, and document output.

Example: You have recorded a lengthy task. In Know It? mode, you want to test competency for part of the process only, for instance the first 10 frames. To exclude the remaining frames from appearing in Know It? mode, you deselect Know It? in the Show In list for each excluded frame.

Display Bubble for this Frame Hide the Bubble
This feature applies to See It! and Try It! modes only. When the Display Bubble for this Frame icon is disabled, the entire bubble for the frame is hidden. This option is often used when your purpose is to give a "slide-like" presentation and you are providing the bubble text narrative, or you have added sound for the narrative. In these situations, the bubble text is unnecessary and might be distracting. Note that you can also use the Show Bubbles property in the Properties toolpane to hide or display all the bubbles for a topic, overriding any individual frame settings. See Hide the Bubble in the Edit Bubble Properties section of the Use the Topic Editor chapter for more information.

This option affects Player and Presentation output.

Action Area On/Off Disable the Action Area

You can hide the display of an action area (the marquee) on a frame when playing a topic in the Player. This feature is often used in conjunction with hiding the bubble for creating and running a slide-like presentation. See Disable the Action Area in the Edit Action Properties/Create a New Action Area section of the Use the Topic Editor chapter for more information.

This option affects Player and Presentation output.

Template Text Visible in Know It? mode Display Template Text in Know It? mode
Template text does not appear for action frames in Know It? mode, except for string inputs (action to enter text). Hiding the template text allows you to test for competency. However, there may be steps in the process for which you do not want to penalize the user for not knowing how to perform the step; for instance, if a step is very specific to the example used. In this situation, you would want to display the template text. See Display Template Text in Know It? mode in the Edit Bubble Properties section of the Use the Topic Editor chapter for more information.

This option affects Player output only.

Auto Select Screenshot to Print (Current screenshot will be included) Auto Select Screenshot to Print (Current screenshot will not be included) Include Screenshot in Print  Do Not Include Screenshot in Print Use Screenshot Publishing
By default, all screenshots are set for automatic selection. This means that when you publish a document output that includes screenshots, the Developer includes only those screenshots that show a change in the context setting for the action. The auto select screenshot publishing icon and tooltip change to indicate if the screenshot for the frame is included or is not included. However, you can use the other screenshot publishing icons to manually choose which screenshots to include or exclude in the published document. See Use Screenshot Publishing in the Manipulate Frames section of the Use the Topic Editor chapter for more information.

This option affects document output only.
