Create a LUN as a Swap Disk

Setting a swap location requires that you create or specify a LUN to use as a swap disk so extra memory is available to the associated virtual machines (VMs) and the applications they contain.

Prerequisites:
  • Credentials to authenticate to the Oracle FS System system that will contain the LUN swap disk.

  • Refer to the documentation for the OS used on the VM for information about creating swap space.

  • Verify that the swapfile policy for the cluster allows the host to specify a datastore.

When you create a LUN as a swap disk, you must associate it with a new or existing datastore. When you select an existing datastore, you are designating its Oracle FS System system as the swap location and the LUN as the swap disk.

  1. In the vSphere inventory tree, right-click the ESX host on which you want to set Oracle FS System system storage as the swap space.
  2. Select Manage Axiom Storage > Set Axiom as Default Swap Location.
Result:A dialog appears that shows the Oracle FS System systems that are connected to the vSphere environment.
  3. Select the Oracle FS System system that will provide the storage for the swap disk.
  4. Authenticate your login credentials to the Oracle FS System system if you have not yet done so.
  5. Click Next.
Result:The Set Swap Location page appears and shows the existing datastores that are associated with the selected Oracle FS System system.
  6. Either select an existing datastore from those listed or click Create Datastore to create a new datastore.
    • If you select an existing datastore, click Swap. The selected datastore is designated as the swap disk on the Oracle FS System system you selected.

    • If you click Create Datastore, the Add Storage page appears.

Select an existing LUN or click Create LUN to launch the Manage LUN wizard. To create the LUN, follow the instructions for creating a LUN with the Manage LUNs Wizard.

  7. Click Done to complete the swap disk creation.
