3 What's New With ELS 7.3?

ELS 7.3 enhancements consist of the following:

  • Support for VSM 6 32 GB VTVs. In addition to existing VTV sizes, ELS 7.3 supports VSM 6 32 GB VTVs.

  • Support for XAPI Security. ELS 7.3 implements authentication using a challenge/response protocol to authenticate individual XAPI client/server transactions. If XAPI security protocol is implemented in both client and server, the server can trust client identity, for example, VM Client 7.3 and SMC 7.3. If XAPI security protocol is implemented in server but not client, the server can use XCLIENT command to exclude clients from XAPI Security. For example, VM Client 7.2 and SMC 7.3.

  • Support for the SL8500 library Bulk CAP, which provides larger CAP throughput than SL8500 rotational CAPs.

Affected commands include Display Cap, Display CDS, EJect, and a new command, SET EJCTSKP. See the Command, Control Statement, and Utility Reference. New procedures detailing how to change the CAP type and the CAP state have been added to the Managing HSC and VTCS document. Messages SLS2008I, SLS4001I, and SLS4419I have been updated and appear in the Messages and Codes.

  • Support for 512 VTDs in VTCS.

Affected commands include CONFIg GLOBAL, CONFIg VTSS, Display VTD, and Display VTV. See the Command, Control Statement, and Utility Reference. New procedures describing how to implement and disable 512 VTD support appear in the Configuring HSC and VTCS document.

  • Support for enhanced replication. Affected commands include Vary CLINK, Vary LINKSto, Display VTSS Detail, Display CLINK, and Display LINKSto. See the Command, Control Statement, and Utility Reference. For usage information, see "VTCS Enhanced Replication" in the Configuring HSC and VTCS document. Messages SLS0030I, SLS6870I, and SLS6900I have been modified and SLS7533I, SLS7535I, and SLS7538I have been added. See the Messages and Codes document.

  • Support for the following SMC commands that appear in the Command, Control Statement, and Utility Reference:

    • SMC Offload Utility (SMCUSMF) offloads SMF records from a VSM console (VSMc) server.

    • SMC LIMIT command enables you to limit resource usage in the SMC subsystem. This command can help limit exposure to Sx78 type abends.

    • Updated the SMC MONitor command description to note conditions where SMC is not able to support the detection of pending mounts.

    • Updated the SMC Route command description to note support for the XAPI client interface to an ACSLS server.

    • The SMC VMSG command enables you to start or stop the Virtual Storage Manager console (VSMc) message processor client.

  • The SWitch command has been enhanced to display active hosts in an HSC/ELS complex that conflict with switch processes. Affected commands include Display Status and SWitch RESET. See the Command, Control Statement, and Utility Reference. Messages SLS0044I and SLS1670I are new and SLS0157I, SLS0453I, SLS0910I, SLS1008I, and SLS1656E have been modified. See the Messages and Codes document.

  • Support for the oVTCS CDS database server component proxy that enables a remote outboard oVTCS to act as a local z/OS VTCS for accessing the z/OS resident CDS database. See the DBSERVer command in the Command, Control Statement, and Utility Reference and Appendix M "Running the oVTCS CDS Database Server" in the Configuring HSC and VTCS document. Messages SLS0780I, SLS0781I, SLS0782I, SLS0783I, SLS0784I, SLS0785I, SLS0786I, SLS0787I, SLS0788I, SLS0789I, SLS0790I, SLS0791I, SLS0792I, and SLS0793I have been added. See the Messages and Codes document.

  • Support for the RECLaim MOVEDATA parameter that can be used to limit VTV data movement and to free up low-use partitions on an Automatically Linked Partition (ALP) MVC. See the Command, Control Statement, and Utility Reference. Also, see "Dynamic Reclaim - Specifying VTV Data Movement" in the Configuring HSC and VTCS document.
