About Drop-Down Lists

A drop-down list allows you to click a down arrow button to the right of a field to select from a list of available values. Figure 3-7 shows an example of a drop-down list. You can also type the value or the starting letters of the value you are looking for in the drop-down field to automatically select it. After typing the value or starting letters of the value, tab or click off the field. The appropriate value appears in the field unless more than one value match the starting letters you entered. In this case, the drop-down list opens and you must select the appropriate value.

Note:

In standard-interactivity mode when the accessibility mode is enabled, <Select> will appear in drop-down list fields. Select the appropriate value from the available list of values.

When accessing drop-down lists, screen reader users must switch to forms mode when using JAWS, focus mode when using NVDA, or Browse Off mode when using Window Eyes. Press the ALT and the down arrow key to expand the drop-down list, and then press the down arrow or up arrow keys to hear the list items. When the proper list item is found, press the enter key to select it.
