About Database Synchronization

Synchronization is an important process if you are a remote user of the application. You must synchronize on a regular basis to maintain the database on your remote laptop.

The copy of the database that resides on your laptop is generally referred to as a local database. Your Siebel application is the interface that allows you to add and manipulate information in the database. Using a dial-up connection, you synchronize your local database with the database on the server. This means that you send data to the server and receive data from it, as shown in Figure 10-1.

For example, if you add several new opportunities to your local database, it is important that you synchronize this information, which is on your laptop, with that on the server. This is your way of backing up the new data to the server. If, on the server, you are added as a team member to a new account, it is important that you synchronize so that the data for this new account will be added to your local database upon synchronization.
