5 Using the Visual Bill of Material (Release 9.2 Update)

This chapter contains the following topics:

5.1 Understanding the Visual Bill of Material

A bill of material (BOM) is a list of all of the components and the quantities of each component required to manufacture a product. A BOM can contain other BOMs, as well as raw materials, subassemblies, and so on.

The Visual Bill of Material program (P30001X) enables you to view a BOM as a hierarchical diagram, and to expand and collapse levels of the hierarchy as needed. You can view details about each item in the BOM, and access many commonly used programs for working with bills of material.

5.2 Viewing Bills of Material in a Hierarchy

This section discusses how to:

  • Set processing options for Visual Bill of Material (P30001X).

  • Locate bills of material.

  • View bills of material.

  • Access programs associated with bills of material.

5.2.1 Setting Processing Options for Visual Bill of Material (P30001X)

Processing options enable you to specify default processing values.

5.2.1.1 Options

1. Display Images on Visual Bill of Material

Use this processing option to specify whether to display images on the cards in the visual BOM. If you enter 1 to display images, the system displays the default image that is associated with the item.

If images are attached to the item master but none are specified as the default image, the program displays the first image.

5.2.1.2 Defaults

1. Default Bill of Material Type

Use this processing option to specify a value from the Bill Type (40/TB) UDC table that the system uses as the default bill of material type.

5.2.1.3 Versions

Except for the Multi-Level BOM Inquiry processing option, the system uses the values in this processing option when you access the program from the visual Bill of Material program.

1. Multi-Level BOM Inquiry (P30200)

Use this processing option to specify the version of the Multi-Level BOM Inquiry program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0002 so that you can view an item's relationship to all other items.

This processing option enables or restricts the ability to view multiple levels in a bill of material. If you specify a version that is not set up to enable multiple levels, then you can view only one level at a time. The default version, ZJDE0002, enables multiple levels.

2. Item Master (P4101)

Use this processing option to specify the version of the Item Master program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0001.

3. Item Branch (P41026)

Use this processing option to specify the version of the Item Branch program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0001.

4. Bill of Materials Revisions (P3002

Use this processing option to specify the version of the Bill of Materials Revision program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0001.

5. ECO Workbench (P30225)

Use this processing option to specify the version of the ECO Workbench program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0001.

6. Routing Inquiry (P3003)

Use this processing option to specify the version of the Routing Inquiry program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0002.

7. Substitutes (P3002S)

Use this processing option to specify the version of the Substitutes program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0001.

10. Where Used Diagram (P30002X)

Use this processing option to specify the version of the Where Used Diagram program to use. If you leave this processing option blank, the system uses version ZJDE0001.

Description of Figure 5-1 follows
Description of ''Figure 5-1 Visual Bill of Material form''

To locate a bill of material, complete the fields in the left panel, and then click Refresh:

  1. Enter the item number of a bill of material in the Item Number field.

    This field is required.

You can enter a valid item number that is not for the parent item in a bill of material, but the program does not display a hierarchy unless the item number entered has child components.

  2. Enter the branch or plant number where the item resides in the Branch Plant field.

    This field is required.

  3. Select the type of BOM that you want to locate from the Type of Bill list.

The Type of Bill field lists the values in UDC 40/TB. You can specify a value in the Default Bill of Material Type processing option to provide a default value. You can change the value as needed.

  4. Requested Quantity

The system completes this field with the default value from the item master record, and displays the quantity in the Quantity Per field on the cards. If you change the value in the Requested Quantify field, the program updates the values in the Quantity Per fields in the cards. Changes that you make in this field are not saved to the item record.

  5. Enter the date for which you want to view the bill of material in the As of Date field.

The items associated with a BOM can change. For example, you might begin using parts from a different manufacturer beginning on a specific date. Use this field to locate the BOM as it existed on a specific date. If you do not enter a date, the system uses the current date.

5.2.4 Viewing Bills of Material Information

When you select the BOM whose information you want to view, the system displays a card with the item you selected to view, and the items and subassemblies associated with the selected item. If you set up the processing option to display them, the cards also include an image of the item.

The following list describes the actions that you can perform and the information that you can view in the visual BOM:

  • View cards in a larger size.

If you have a lot of items in a BOM, you might need to view each card in a larger size to see the details on the card. You can view the cards in a larger size by hovering your cursor over a card. The larger size remains on the screen only when your cursor is over the card. You can also hover your cursor over a card and then click the Isolate icon at the top of the card to view the card in a larger size. When you use the Isolate icon, the larger size remains on your screen until you click the Restore icon.

  • Scroll through the views.

Use the arrows on either side of a card to scroll through views. If you do not see the arrows at the bottom of each card, view the card in a larger size by hovering your cursor over the card or by clicking the Isolate icon for the card.

The fields show values from the Material Master File (F3002). The following views are available on the cards:

5.3 Using a Visual Bill of Material in a CafeOne Layout

The Visual Bill of Material program is an ADF application. When you use an ADF application in a CafeOne layout, you must set up the parameters that the calling EnterpriseOne application in the layout uses to interact with the ADF application.

This list describes the parameters available for the visual Bill of Material program:

  • Item Number - Unknown Format Entered

Use this parameter to map to the source of the item number. You must set up this parameter.

  • Branch

Use this parameter to map to the source of the branch/plant of the item. You must set up this parameter.

After you set up the parameters, the left pane of the Property Location Map is collapsed when you access the layout. You can expand the pane and change the value in the search fields.

For each of the parameters, you can select the is mapped to operation and select a value from the calling EnterpriseOne application. Or, you can select remains as if you do not want to specify a value.

The following image shows the Edit mode of a CafeOne layout that includes the Visual Bill of Material, with the Bill of Material Inquiry program (P30200) as the connected EnterpriseOne application. In the image, the Item Number - Unknown Format Entered and Branch parameters are specified.
