You can use the Replace Font dialog box to replace direct font formatting with other direct font formatting for topics and web pages. For example, the current font is set to a Courier New, size 10 font and you want to replace all instances with a Verdana, size 11 font. To replace direct formatting, you specify the properties of both the search and replacement fonts. These properties include font family (such as Arial or Verdana), font size (such as small or 11), font unit (points or pixels), and font style (bold, italic, underline).

If you do not specify any of these properties, the search and replace ignores that property. For example, if you set the Find What options to Arial, blank, blank, and Bold, respectively, the Developer searches the selected content for bold Arial text of all sizes. Similarly, if you set the Replace With options to blank, large, blank, and blank, respectively, the Developer changes the size of the located text to large, but leaves the font family, unit and style unchanged.

To further define a search, you specify the type(s) of text to include in font replacement. Topic text options are only available when replacing direct formatting with direct formatting. In topics, you can apply font replacement to bubble text, Introduction/End frame text, string input text, and template text. You can also apply font replacement to web page text. You must select at least one type of text to include before you can start the font replacement process.

Note: Bubble text in topic frames does not support font families (such as Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif) or font units in pixels. If you select a font family or pixel unit to find or replace, all of the Apply to options that pertain to topics, such as bubble text and string input options, are disabled.

ProcedureTo replace direct formatting with different direct formatting in your content:

  1. From the Library or Outline Editor, select one or more documents or folders containing the documents in which you want to replace a font.

You can select multiple documents using the standard Windows selection keys (CTRL+click and SHIFT+click).

  2. On the Edit menu, choose Replace Font.

  3. In the Direct formatting row of the Find what section, select the font, font size, unit, and font style you want to replace.

  4. In the Direct formatting row of the Replace with section, select the font, font size, unit, and font style with which you want to replace the search font.

  5. Select or deselect Include related documents.

If you include related documents, click View related documents to see the documents included in the find and replace.

  6. In the Apply to section, select the text to which the font replacement should be applied.

You can replace fonts in topic bubble text, Introduction/End frame text, string input text, template text, and web page text.

Note: The options that apply to topic bubble text are disabled if the find or replace formatting specifies a font family or pixel unit.

  7. Click Replace.

If you are working in the Outline Editor, a Replace Confirmation message appears indicating that you cannot undo changes made during font replacement. Click Yes to continue or No to cancel the font replacement process.

The Developer searches the topics and web pages in the selection and replaces every occurrence of the search font with the specified replacement font.

  8. Click OK when notified that the font replacement is completed or that the font cannot be found in the selected content.

If one or more replacements were made, you can also click the View activity log link to see a list of documents in which replacements were made and the number of replacements in each document.

  9. When you are done replacing fonts, click Close.
