By default, all action frames appear in the output for all play modes. You can choose to hide a frame from appearing in the published output for a specific play mode with the Show In option. For example, when testing competency, you may wish to hide a number of frames from appearing in Know It? mode because your procedure includes steps that may not be important to evaluate. When you hide a frame for a play mode, the frame does not appear when the user plays the topic for that mode and the frame step does not appear in print documents published with that play mode. That is, deselecting a frame for the Do It! play mode means that the frame does not appear in Do It! mode in the Player and the step does not appear in a Job Aid, or other documents published using Do It! as the selected text mode. With the Show In option, you can assign different frames, or steps, to different outputs.

Note: With ExactMatch context sensitivity, hidden frames are not included in the results of a search; instead, the next frame with the same context ID (if it exists), is returned.

When you disable a play mode for a frame that contains custom text marked to appear for that play mode, a red diagonal line appears through the Visible in <Play Mode> icon to indicate that although the text is enabled for that play mode, the text does not appear because the entire frame is hidden. For example, a frame contains custom text for which the Visible in See It/Try It! play mode icon is enabled; however, the frame is disabled for See It/Try It! mode in the Show In list. To indicate that the custom text does not appear in published output, the Visible in See It/Try It! icon displays a red diagonal line.

You can use the Display list in the Topic Editor to view your text and frame settings. When you preview a hidden frame, a message appears in the bubble indicating that the bubble and screenshot does not appear in this play mode.

Note: Although Know It? mode is enabled in the Show In list for Explanation frames, Explanation frames do not appear in Know It? mode because, by default, custom text is not marked as visible for that play mode. Explanation frames appear in Know It? mode when custom text is enabled for that play mode.
