Styles are applied to the text and graphic elements of a web page either by the manual application of the style or by inheriting a default style. You can view a style applied to a web page element from the Styles box on the Web Page Editor - Font and Formatting toolbar or the Style Inspector toolpane. The Styles box is blank if no style is applied to the selection. Clicking the Styles list arrow displays a list of styles that you can apply to the selected web page element. The styles that appear in the list are filtered to show only the styles that can be applied to the currently selected element. For example, when you click in a table, the Styles list displays all table styles in the style sheet. A style name in bold text indicates a default style for the element.

Styles are automatically applied to web page elements if those styles are designated as default styles in the style sheet. For example, the attached style sheet contains a default Bulleted List style named Bullet1. When you create a bulleted list, the Bullet1 style is automatically applied and the name appears in the Styles text box when you click in the bulleted list.

Note: You do not have to select text to apply a style that applies to an entire element; you can simply click in the element. These styles include paragraph, bulleted and numbered list, table, and heading styles.

For more information about creating styles, see the Create Styles to Format Content chapter in the Content Development Guide.

Replace Formatting with Styles

You can use the Replace Font tool to help you replace direct formatting in one or more web pages with a text style. In addition, you can also use this tool to replace one style with another from the same style sheet. See Replace Fonts and Styles in the Use Content Tools section of the Build an Outline chapter for more information.

Clear a Style

You can use the Clear Style icon to remove a style from an element. Clearing a non-default style, automatically applies the default style to the selected element. You cannot clear a default style from an element.

Clearing a style does not remove direct formatting; only the Clear Formatting from Text tool removes direct formatting from selected text. When clearing a style, you do not have to select the entire span of text to which the style is applied. You merely have to click in the text span. For example, you have applied a text style to four consecutive words. You can click in any of the four words and use Clear Style to remove the style from all four words.

Deleted and Renamed Styles

If an applied style is deleted or renamed in the style sheet, all instances in web pages using the deleted or renamed style are now identified as "Unknown style <style name>". If the deleted or renamed style is a default style for an element, the Web Page Editor applies the browser defaults for that element. If the deleted or renamed style is not a default style for an element, the Web Page Editor applies the default style for that element.
