The Format list on the Web Page Editor - Font and Formatting toolbar is used to apply predefined paragraph formats to block elements, such as paragraphs and headings. The formats apply a combination of attributes designed to give a uniform look to the text in these paragraphs. These formats include:

To apply one of the above formats to a paragraph, select the format from the Format list. If the web page links to a style sheet that contains a default style for that format, the paragraph is formatted for that style; otherwise, the browser default style is applied.

Note: You can apply a paragraph format to new text before you type or apply it to existing text by clicking in the paragraph and selecting a format. Since the formats apply to the entire paragraph, you do not have to select the text in the paragraph to apply the format.

Styles and the Format List

You can redefine the formatting for the paragraph formats in the Format list by linking to a style sheet and creating or modifying the default styles for each element type, including each heading level. Default styles are automatically applied when you add an element from the Format list. A style sheet may also contain styles that are not set as default styles. You can only apply a non-default style for an element to existing text already tagged for the same element. To use a Heading, Preformatted, or Address style that is not a default style, you must first add the element to your web page from the Format list. Once you add the element, the Styles list displays all default and non-default styles of the same element type. Therefore, only Heading 2 styles appear for Heading 2 elements.

Note: The Standard style sheet contains six non-default heading levels that you can apply to existing heading elements.
