Update Software

Navigation: Support > Software and Firmware > Actions > Update Software

Manages the software and firmware updates on the Oracle FS System. Enables you to create an update schedule or immediately update, and also allows you to select the upgrade options and system overrides.
The update process affects all software modules and firmware on the Oracle FS System. To specify which updates are installed on individual components, login as support administrator.
Important! When logged into the system as a support administrator, you can select individual components to update from the software module package. You can also select Always Install, Install if newer version, or Do not install. Contact Oracle Customer Support before installing individual software components.
Install Action
Identifies the action to perform on the selected module during the software update. The support administrator role allows you to select individual software packages to install.
Note: When you selectively update the software modules, the Oracle FS System cannot determine the current software module version and displays unsupported as the installed software version.
The choices include:
Do not install
Select this option to keep the existing module version.
Install if newer version
Select this option to upgrade the existing module only if the update is a later version. This is the default action and the only action available to administrators. This action does not require you to be logged in as a support administrator.
Always Install
Select this option always install the selected module.
Note: The Always Install option may cause an upgrade or downgrade to the currently installed module version. You may also use this feature to install a module that does not apply to your current hardware. For example, to prepare for new hardware to be installed.
Module
Identifies the name of a module that is in the staged package.
Installed Version

Identifies the version number of a software module. A value of unsupported indicates there is a problem with the individual software module. Contact Oracle Customer Support for assistance.

Staged Version

Identifies the version number of the staged software module. Staged software is a newer version of the software that can be installed.

Update Software without restarting
Updates the software on the Oracle FS System. The update is performed without a system restart and I/O data access is not disrupted unless Oracle Customer Support instructs you to choose the Shutdown Controller software update option. This the default setting for most updates. Based on the type of updated, the system recommends which update option to use. If this option is selected by the system, use this option.
Note: You may need to change this value to the Restart and update software (disrupts data access) if requested to do so by Oracle Customer Support based on your system configuration.
Restart and update software (disrupts data access)
Updates the software on the Oracle FS System. The update performs a shutdown which disrupts I/O data access and the restarts the system to install the update. Based on the type of update, the system recommends which update option to use. If the option is selected by the system, use this option.

Software Update Options

Note: Only select any of the following options if instructed to by Oracle Customer Support or if the Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System Release Notes describes specific options or recovery from standard conditions.
The following options provide additional control of the software update. These options apply to all software modules that are ready for update.
Caution
Turning on some of these options disrupts data access.
Ignore compatibility (not recommended)

During the update process, the Oracle FS System verifies that the version of the staged module is compatible with existing hardware and software. Select this option to override a failed compatibility check. This option does not automatically change a non-disruptive upgrade to a disruptive upgrade.

Shutdown Controller

Select this option to force the software update to shutdown all Controller software components for the upgrade. This option affects data access and requires you to select Restart and update software (disrupts data access).

Ignore hardware status (except for Pilots)

Select this option to force the software update regardless of the state of the system hardware. This option can affect data access, depending on the specific hardware and state of the Controller or Drive Enclosure hardware.

If the Controller has issues, do not use this option without first contacting Oracle Customer Support to determine whether the Shutdown Controller option should also be used.

Ignore system alerts
Select this option to proceed with the software upgrade and ignore any system alerts. An upgrade of any type is blocked if there are any system alerts unless this option is turned on. This option may or may not affect data access, depending on the specific system alert.
Ignore current requests

Select this option to proceed with the software upgrade regardless of pending system requests. This option allows you to begin the upgrade even if there are blocking tasks running which are visible in the Tasks list. (A blocking task is a task that normally would be completed before a system restart.)

If a task is running that is modifying storage, host access, or system software, contact Oracle Customer Support before turning on this option. This option may or may not affect data access, depending on the specific task.

Override failed software update

Select this option to overwrite a previous, failed software update. Once an upgrade fails, that status is kept, and you can only clear it by selecting this option and having a successful upgrade. Do not use this option unless instructed to by Oracle Customer Support or described in the Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System Release Notes.

Schedule Software Update

Adds scheduling capabilities to the software update.
Schedule software update to occur at a later time
Enables you to select the upgrade and options and schedule it for a later time. Lists any existing scheduled updates with the options listed.
Note: The Schedule software update to occur at a later time option is only available to users logged in with administrator role; users logged in with support role cannot access this feature.
Time to Perform Software Update
Note: This option is displayed whether or not there is a scheduled update. If there is an existing schedule, then that schedule is displayed.
Identifies the time at which the Oracle FS System starts a scheduled software update.
Note: The pop‑up calendar that is used to set the software update schedule is limited to the next 72‑hours. Note that not all of the drop-down lists and other features of this calendar are functional. This behavior is normal.

Software Update Validation Errors

The Software Update Validation Errors appears if the options you selected cause a conflict with existing software or hardware. If there are no conflicts, the Software Update Validation Errors is not displayed.

Information is provided why the update is not allowed but for guidance on how to resolve the issue, contact Oracle Customer Support or review the Oracle FS1-2 Flash Storage System Release Notes

Note: If there is an issue with a software update and the issues results in a validation error, the scheduled upgrade is blocked, and a system alert is also created.
