Remarks on the Program Function

A file backup can generally be carried out from the operating system level, but it is started from the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS menu by default. Open the window File Backup via System. There are four input or selection fields available by use of which you can determine the data to be saved and the data medium.

After making the entries described further below, click on the Start button to start the file backup. A window will then open in which the currently saved data will be displayed. Make sure that an appropriate Data Medium has been inserted before the start.

Notes on file backup on floppy disk:

Remarks on the Input Fields

Four input fields are available in the area of file backup.

Source Directory

Three (in UNIX) / zwei (in Windows NT) options are offered by the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application:

  1. From Working Directory (UNIX and Windows NT)
All *.DAT- und *.IDX files of the directory work will be saved.
  2. Server Database (UNIX und Windows NT)
All *.DAT files of the directory work.srv will be saved. The directory name will be displayed, too.
  3. Whole MICROS Retail OSCAR POS Directory (UNIX and Windows NT)
All directories incl. all files from MICROS Retail OSCAR POS will be saved.

Backup Medium

The following selection options or available:

  1. To Streamer Tape
Select this option if you carry out the backup by use of a streamer. This option is the most frequently used one,
  2. To Floppy Disk
The memory capacity of a floppy disk is limited. Therefore it should only be used for the backup of small quantities of data.
The MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application checks for the correct floppy disk format automatically. If it does not correspond to the format required by the operating system, the floppy disk will be formatted.
    Note:
If your MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application is installed on a UNIX system, the data will be stored in CPIO format. Please consider the commands related to the format, e.g. for checking the saved files.
The system assumes 3,5" disks with a memory of 1.4 MB. Compare the notes on Capacity.
Just like the streamer tape, the floppy disk offers data security in cases of a hard disk defect.
  3. To Archive File
If you choose this option the files to be saved will be copied to a separate directory. The path and name of the directory will be determined via the Name of the Archive File. Please note that in cases of a hard drive defect, these data could be affected.

Name of Archive File

An entry in this field is only possible if you selected the Archive File to be the Data Medium. Enter the path and the directory name.

Media Capacity

Enter the capacity of the data medium in this field. Depending on the selection, there might be already a predefined value. For example, if you choose the option “floppy disk”, the field will display 1440 (= 1,4 MB Disk). The value can be edited. Please note that the unit of the values displayed or to be entered is KByte. The actual memory capacity of the medium can be found on the medium’s label. If you choose to save your data in a Working Directory, you do not have to enter a capacity value.

If the value displayed by default does not equal the value of your medium, you can edit the default value:
