This chapter is a manual of the
Linux Installation SuSe 6.4 and MICROS Retail OSCAR POS Version 1.6 / 2.0
The following documentation is
only an example of the installation of Linux SuSe 6.4 for Oscar Version 1.6 /
2.0. Depending on the deployed hardware (number / type of hard disks and CD ROM
drives; graphic, network adapter), your installation may differ from this
installation description in some points.
Note:
For the version
MICROS Retail OSCAR POS 1.6, there is currently only the option to start POS
clients without a graphical interface.
This means that the configuration has to be carried out via an administration
terminal from a Windows computer. The installation of the graphical X Window
System and the window manager KDE does not have to be carried out for MICROS
Retail OSCAR POS Version 1.6.
The computer should contain a CD
Rom drive from which the system can be booted. Change the boot sequence in the
bios to CD-ROM, C, A in this case, and, if applicable, the boot option in the
bios of the SCSI host adapter. Other requirements and conditions for the
preparation of the installation can be found in the manual, chapter 2, p. 15.
Alternatively, the installation
can be started from the boot disk included in the delivery.
The entire installation procedure
and the subsequent configuration will be carried out with the text-based SuSe
Linux setup tool "YaST".
For the further procedure, we
assume that you are familiar with the usage of the tool "YaST". A
detailed documentation for the text-based setup tool can be found in the
manual, chapter 2.2, page 28.
- Insert the CD 1 and switch on the
computer to boot from the CD 1. If your computer cannot boot from the CD,
you have to use the Linux "Bootdisk". The CD 1 must be inserted
in the CD ROM drive, even if the "Bootdisk" is the boot medium.
- The welcome screen appears with the
message "Have a lot of fun". Enter the option manual at
the boot prompt (“boot”) within 3 seconds and confirm your entry with the
return key.
- The program linuxrc will start.
Select the desired language, the screen type and the keyboard layout.
- If necessary, load the required kernel
modules (CD ROM driver, SCSI host adapter, network adapter etc.) via the
menu item "Kernel Module (Hardware drivers)" (according to your
computer’s hardware). If required, the modules disk will be demanded by
linuxrc. If you have an ATAPI CD ROM drive, there are no special drivers
to be loaded. ATAPI drives are managed by the (E)DIE hard disk driver.
- Return to the main menu. Select:
Start Installation/System
and then
Start Installation / Update
Source medium = CD ROM (CD ROM drive will be mounted). If the mounting of
this drive is not carried out, you have to load the appropriate CD ROM
drive in the main menu via "Kernel Module (Hardware Drivers)".
YaST1- text-based" to start the actual installation program YaST.
Note:
Further information on how to work with the installation program
"YaST" can be found in the SuSe Linux manual, chapter 2,
page 28 "YaST-Yet another Setup Tool".
- On the YaST introductory screen, select
" New Linux installation".
- First you have to establish the Linux
partition by use of YaST. In Linux, the following 3 partitions will be
established by default.
BOOT Partition (e.g. /dev/hda1 = 1. hard disk)
SWAP Partition (e.g. /dev/hda 2 = 1. hard disk)
ROOT Partion (e.g. /dev/hda 3 = 1. hard disk)
In the next input mask, assign the mount points to the partitions.
/dev/hda = for hard disk 1, or /dev hdb = for hard disk 2
Now YaST will take care of the formatting of the Linux partition, e.g.
/dev/hdb1 Type 83 LINUX native
/dev/hdb2 Type 82 LINUX SWAP
/dev/hdb3 Type 83 LINUX native
- In the next menu, select "Load
configuration" if you want a special software pre-selection
(Workstation, Server system etc.). For the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS
installation, we recommend the installation of the following software
packages:
SuSe Minimal System
SuSe default System
These packages are already preset and have to be adopted. If there are
superfluous software modules, they can be uninstalled later.
- Select the menu item "Start
Installation" and press the Return key.
- After the installation has been finished,
you have to return to the main menu to carry out the configuration.
- Select the kernel with which you would
like to start your system in future.
Selection= Default Linux Kernel.
Subsequently, you will be queried
if you would like to configure LILO. Notes on the input in the individual masks
can be found in chapter 3.6.2 of your manual.
In order to allow Linux to start
at all, a boot mechanism has to be prepared, e.g. it must be defined at which
place in the system the boot manager LILO (= Linux Loader) is to
be installed or if a different boot concept is to be deployed. This depends –
among others - on the answer to the question if you want to install additional
operating systems on your computer, along with Linux. Further information can
be found in the manual, chapter 2, page 22.
For the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS
standard installation, we assume that Linux is the only operating system to be
installed on your computer. In this case, LILO definitely has to be in the MBR
(Master Boot Record) of the first hard disk.
- With first installation, you have to
configure the Linux Loader.
Define where LILO is to be installed:
Master-Boot-Sector
F4= New Config
Confirm all other fields via the Return key to accept the presets.

- Configure the time zone = CET, local time
setting
- Enter the computer and domain name.
- Configuration TCP/IP (= real Network)
- Type = eth0
- IP Address , Net mask
- Install INETD
- Portmapper = No
- Name Server = at will
- Network type = Selection of the network
adapter (individual). If the network adapter is not recognized after the
installation has been finished, proceed as follows to remedy the error.
Start "YaST" as signed-on user "root" and change the
network adapter to the valid values. (System administration ->
integrate hardware in system -> configure network adapter)
- Sendmail = no
- The "root" password will
be required. You will need it every time you want to sign on as the system
administrator. Select the system password. Keep it in mind thoroughly,
make sure the spelling is correct (case-sensitive!).
- Select the modem and the mouse and
install other CD packages.
- After the “booting”, the configuration
will be continued. YaST will ask you to insert all following CD ROMs to
install the rest of the software.
Then, YaST will finish itself and
you will be asked to press Enter.
After the system has been
rebooted, the graphic X Window system has to be installed and the window
manager KDE has to be configured (MICROS Retail OSCAR POS Version 2.0 only). Further
notes on the installation of the X server can be found in chapter 9,
page261 of the manual.
The installation and
configuration of X-Window Systems is to be carried out with SaX (= SuSe Advanced
X Configuration Tool). Detailed information on the usage of this tool
can be found in chapter 8.1, page 236 of the manual.
- As signed-on user "root", start
the setup tool YaST again and select the menu item "System
administration" and then the menu item "Configure Xfree86
[tm]".
- Select the menu item "SaX" (=SuSe
advanced XF86-Konfiguration) and press Enter in order to carry out the
settings for the X86-System in a menu-controlled way. The configuration
depends on the deployed hardware of your system and has to be carried out
individually. (cp. manual chapter 8.1.1 page 236).
During the configuration, the individual components such as the mouse and
the graphic adapter will be recognized automatically. You definitely have
to make sure that the automatically found values are equivalent to those
of your hardware.
- First, define a new user. Start YaST and
move to the menu item "System administration" ->"User
management". Press Enter too enter the user management menu.
- Enter the user name "oscar"
and assign this user to the user group "users".
- Sign on as user "oscar".
- Start the X servers (Oscar Version 2.0
only ) via the command:
oscar@computer name /oscar >startx
- Open a console window and create a
directory into which the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS software is to be installed
later.
oscar@computer name : >mkdir osc20
- Enter this directory and copy the
installation files to this directory. The required installation files
currently include the following two files:
install.sh (= Installation script)
2.0a-t4.tar.gz (= the name of the program archive depends on the version
and will be unpacked and installed via the command
"install.sh").
- Start the installation via the command:
oscar@computer name /osc20 install.sh 2.0a-t4.tar.gz
- For the
MICROS Retail OSCAR POS version 2.0, the query for the registration of the
drivers for the following interface cards takes place during the
installation.:
Driver for the terminal card(s):
Install register card driver? (y/n) y
Driver for the interface card of the terminal drawer
Install drawer driver? (y/n) y
Driver for the IMC interface card
Install imc board driver? (y/n)
Finally, the message "Activating ADS Drivers" will appear. The
installation of all program files and the drivers is complete.
- For the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS version
1.6, the registration of the interface card drivers takes place as
follows:
Installation with -i De-installation with -u:
root@computer name:/home/osc20/ >sh bin/setup -i
root@computer name:/home/osc20/ >sh bin/setup -u
- Enter the directory work to
continue the installation of the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS program.
- Create a new empty database in case of a
completely new MICROS Retail OSCAR POS installation.
oscar@computer name /osc20/work > oscar init
or execute the following commands in a subsequent order if you
would like to adopt an already existing MICROS Retail OSCAR POS database:
oscar@computer name /osc20/work > oscar convert
oscar@computer name /osc20/work > oscar init UiText
oscar@computer name /osc20/work > oscar init DbText
oscar@computer name /osc20/work > oscar dofgl.fgl Sprache (=
Deutsch, English, Francais).
- Start the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS
application again in the singleuser mode: oscar@computer name
/osc20/work > oscar singleuser
Check the configuration, or configure the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS
application in order to be able to start the MICROS Retail OSCAR POS
application in the multiuser mode:
oscar@computer name /osc20/work > oscar start
- For the automatic start and end of the
MICROS Retail OSCAR POS application via the commands "oscar
enable" and "oscar disable", the
following commands have to be executed on the command level in the version
Oscar 1.6:
Automatic Start Oscar 1.6 (Oscar 2.0 = oscar enable).
root@computer name:/home/oscar/osc20 > cp bin/S99oscar.sh
/etc/rc.d/rc2.d/S99oscar
After the system start, the corresponding MICROS Retail OSCAR POS
process units will be started automatically.
Undo Automatic Start Oscar 1,6 (Oscar 2.0 = oscar
disable).
root@computer name:/home/oscar/osc20 > rm /etc/rc2.d/S99oscar
There will be no more automatic start of the MICROS Retail OSCAR
POS application.
