Splitting a large File

During an online transfer of a large file, there are often connection break-downs. The connection must be re-established and the transfer process has to be started again, even if the major part of the file has already been transferred.

A: Windows - HJ-Split (Freeware for Windows)

By use of the application HJ-Split, a large file can be divided into several small parts, transferred and re-combined to a large file. In the following, you will find a short description of the individual program functions.

1. Split
• Divides a large file into small parts. Click on the button Split to reach the next window.
2. File Splitter
• Split file size (Kb): <1400>
  Enter the size for the part files in KB here. If the parted files are to be transported on floppy disks, the default value should be confirmed.
• File to split: <unknown>
  Click in the field with the word unknown. The "Open" function of the NT-Explorer will be activated. Select the drive and directory and highlight the file to be split. Click on the button Open. The name of the selected file will replace the word unknown.
• Start
  After you have defined the size of the split files and the file to be split, click on the Start button. The process will be started, which is indicated by the message Working in the button Start. When the process is complete, Ready and - in another window - Splitting Completed <OK> will appear. Click OK. The message Ready will change to Start again. The split files can be found in the directory in which the original file is located. The split files receive a sequential 3-digit number added to the original file name.
• Hide
  Click on the button Hide to return to the main menu.
3. Join
• Combines the split files that have been generated by use of the Split function to the original file. Click on the button Join to reach the next window.
4. File Joiner
• Requirement:
  Before you start Join, copy all part files to be joined into an empty folder.
• Files to join <unknown>
  Click in this field, behind the word unknown. The "Open" function of the NT-Explorer will be activated. Select the drive and the directory to which you have copied the part files. Highlight the file with the number 001.
  (e.g.: NT971212.zip.001). Click on the button Open. The name of the selected file (incl. the path) will replace the word unknown. In addition, the drive, directory and the name of the original file will be displayed in the next parameter.
• Files to restore
  If the right file (e.g.: NT971212.zip.001) has been selected in the previous parameter Files to join, this field will automatically display the name and path of the original file.
• Start
  After you have selected the part file with the number 001, click on the Start button. The message Working will appear. When the process is complete, Ready and - in another window - Joining Completed <OK> will appear. Click OK. The message Ready will change to Start again. The joined file can be found in the directory in which the part files are located. The file name of the joined file will be added by joined.
  You can repeat this procedure for further files. In the field of the parameter Files to join, there is the note select a new file.
• Hide
  Click on the button Hide to return to the main menu.
5. Compare
• Compares two files and determines differences. Click on the button Compare to reach the next window.
• File 1 <unknown>
  Click in this field, behind the word unknown. The "Open" function of the NT-Explorer will be activated. Select the drive and the directory and highlight the first file you would like to compare. Click on the Open button. The selected file, including the path, will be displayed in the field File 1.
• File 2 <unknown>
  Click in this field, behind the word unknown. The "Open" function of the NT-Explorer will be activated. Select the drive and the directory and highlight the second file you would like to compare. Click on the Open button. The selected file, including the path, will be displayed in the field File 2.
• Start
  Click on the Start button after selecting the required files. During the process, the Start button will show the message Working. After the process has been finished, a result message (e.g.: files are equal <OK>) will appear in an additional window. Click on <OK>. The process can be repeated for further files.
• Hide
  Click on Hide to return to the main menu.
6. Checksum
• Generates a checksum of a file. You should use this function for every joined file and compare the result with the checksum of the original file. By this, you can make sure that no errors occurred during the transfer. Click on the button Checksum to reach the next window.
• FileName <unknown>
  Click in this field, behind the word unknown. The "Open" function of the NT-Explorer will be activated. Select the drive and the directory in which the joined file is located. Highlight the file with the appendix joined (or the renamed original file). Click on the Open button. The name (incl. path) of the selected file will replace the word unknown.
• Start
  Click on the Start button after selecting the required file. During the process, the Start button will show the message Working. After the process has been finished, the message Checksum ready <OK> will appear in a new window.
  The calculated checksum will be in the field Checksum. This checksum has to be equal to that of the original file.
• Hide
  Click on Hide to return to the main menu.
7. Exit
• Closes the program HJ-Split.
8. Help
• A help is not provided by the author of HJ-Split.

B: Linux

For spitting a file, use the following command:

• split -b2m file name

The number 2 stands for the maximum part file size in MB. This value can be changed if required.

The generated split files are called xaa, xab ...

In order to join them again, use the command:

• cat xaa xab ... > file name
