Styles can be copied within the same style sheet or from one style sheet to another. This is helpful if you want to use a style as a basis for another style. When copying a style, all print and language variations of the style are also copied and pasted.

After copying a style, you can change the copied style as needed. If you copy a style into a style sheet that contains a duplicate style name, an incremental number is appended to the name of the copied style to prevent naming conflicts.

Styles copied from one style sheet to another may not appear with the same attributes as the original style if the style inherits attributes from another style. Because of inheritance, the appearance of the copied style is affected by the styles in the style sheet where the copy is pasted. For example, if you copy a paragraph style that inherits its Arial font style from the document body style or from a default paragraph style and paste it into a style sheet that defines a Courier font for the document body style, the pasted style now inherits the Courier font from the document body style.

Note: You can use Undo to undo the pasted copy.

When copying styles to another style sheet, only directly applied attributes are copied and guaranteed to remain unchanged. You can use the Style Inspector to see which attributes are directly applied or inherited, and the styles providing those attributes for the copied style.

Warning! When copying bulleted list styles, note that a style sheet cannot contain two embedded bullet images with the same file name. If you copy a bulleted list style with an embedded image into another style sheet that uses an embedded image with the same file name, the pasted style uses the image in the current style sheet.
