An assessment is a collection of questions or questions and topics that help determine a user's level of understanding of the content. You create and edit assessments in the Developer using the Assessment Editor by linking existing questions or by creating new questions. Assessments can be added anywhere in the Library or outline; however, only assessments linked to or set as associated assessments to an outline are available for publishing.

Note: You can modify the Assessment Template in the Library to customize the appearance of the Assessment Summary page in the Developer and published output. See Customize Assessment Elements in the Customize the Player section of the Publish Content chapter for more information.

The Assessment Editor is used to design and manage assessments. The Assessment Editor toolbar contains icons for linking new and existing questions, deleting links to questions and changing question order.

Link New Question Link New Question: Links a new question (of any type) to the assessment.

Link Existing Question Link Existing Question: Browses the Library to link existing questions or topics to the assessment.

Delete Link Delete Link: Removes the link for the selected document (question or topic) to the assessment. The document remains in the Library but is no longer linked to the assessment.

Move Up Move Up: Moves the selected document(s) up one row.

Move Down Move Down: Moves the selected documents(s) down one row.

You can add a concept to an assessment to provide additional instructions for the assessment or explain how it is used. You add a concept to an assessment in the Outline Editor by selecting the assessment in the outline and using the Concept pane to create or link a web page, package item, or URL. The concept appears in the Concept pane on the assessment's Start page in the Player and is included in the Training Guide and Instructor Manual document formats if you choose to publish with assessments.

Note: Assessments are also important for Personalized Content if you are using the Professional edition of the Knowledge Center. Personalized Content uses assessment results to allow a user to modify the full subject by excluding sections for which he/she has demonstrated competency. This feature allows users to concentrate on the sections in which they had the most difficulty. If you are using assessments as a way for a user to narrow down content to focus on, you should design assessments that cover a representative sample of the subject material. See Work with the Assessment Coverage View in the Enhance Content with Questions and Assessments chapter.

Assign Roles to Assessments

If you are using roles to filter your content for different audiences, you can create an assessment that contains a pool of all questions for all roles. When you publish by roles, only the questions assigned to the specified role, or roles, are included in the published assessment.

To use an assessment as a question pool, you assign one or more roles to each assessment question and then assign those same roles to the assessment. Each role that you assign to a question in the assessment must also be assigned to the assessment document itself. For example, if different questions in the assessment are assigned to the Sales, Clerk, and Administrator roles, all of those roles must be assigned to the assessment if you want the assessment to appear in the role-specific published output. If you assign the Marketing role to assessment questions, but fail to assign that role to the assessment, the assessment will not be included when you publish content filtered for the Marketing role.
