Generating New Item Slotting Data (GNIS)
Purpose: Use this menu option to create new item locations for pickable primary locations that have remaining room, based on the selection criteria you enter on the Generate New Item Slotting Data Screen. You can create an item location only for locations that currently are not associated with any item locations or whose Max SKUs setting has not been reached.
In addition to creating new item location records, you can also define the following information for the item:
• shipping weight
• selling weight
• pieces per case (case quantity)
• UPC code, using the UPC type in the Default UPC Type for Slotting New Items (L84) system control value and the UPC vendor in the Default UPC Vendor for Slotting New Items (L85) system control value

Field |
Description |
Warehouse |
A code for the warehouse where you wish to create new primary item locations. The warehouse defined in the Default Warehouse (A04) system control value defaults, but you can override it. Warehouse codes are defined in and validated against the Warehouse table; see Creating and Maintaining Warehouses (WWHS). Code: Numeric, 3 positions; required. Description: Alphanumeric, 30 positions; display-only. |
Slotting Group |
A code for the slotting group assigned to the locations where you wish to create new primary item locations. The setting of the Item Classification for Slotting Groups (L82) system control value defines whether you use item category or item class to define slotting groups. • If set to ITMCAT, you use item category to define slotting groups. If you prompt on the Slotting group field, the system displays the Select Item Category window where you can review and select the item category (slotting group) assigned to the location. Item category codes are defined in and validated against the Item Category table; see Working with Item Category Codes (WITG). • If set to ITMCLS, you use item class to define slotting groups. If you prompt on the Slotting group field, the system displays the Select Item Class window where you can review and select the item class (slotting group) assigned to the location. Item class codes are defined in and validated against the Item Class table; see Working with Item Classes (WICL). Leave this field blank if you do not wish to restrict the locations that display on the Create New Item Warehouse/Locations Screen based on slotting group. This field displays only if the Item Classification for Slotting Groups (L82) system control value contains a value. Alphanumeric, 10 positions; optional. |
Bin Type |
A code for the bin type assigned to the locations where you wish to create new primary item locations. Bin types are defined in and validated against the Location Bin Type table. See Work with Location Bin Types (WLBT). Leave this field blank if you do not wish to restrict the locations that display on the Create New Item Warehouse/Locations Screen based on bin type. Alphanumeric, 4 positions; optional. |
Location Class |
A code for the location class assigned to the locations where you wish to create new primary item locations. Location class codes are defined in and validated against the Location Class table; see Creating and Maintaining Location Classes (WLCL). Leave this field blank if you do not wish to restrict the locations that display on the Create New Item Warehouse/Locations Screen based on location class. Alphanumeric, 2 positions; optional. |
Velocity Rank |
A code for the velocity rank assigned to the locations where you wish to create new primary item locations. The system uses the velocity rank during slotting to determine where the top and bottom performing items should be placed. Valid values: • Rank 1 = The location is part of the golden/hot zone velocity rank where top performing items should be placed. • Rank 2 = The location is part of the second zone velocity rank where items close to top performing should be placed. • Rank 3 = The location is part of the third zone velocity rank where items in between top performing and bottom performing should be placed. • Rank 4 = The location is part of the fourth zone velocity rank where items close to bottom performing should be placed. • Rank 5 = The location is part of the lowest zone velocity rank where bottom performing items should be placed. Leave this field blank if you do not wish to restrict the locations that display on the Create New Item Warehouse/Locations Screen based on velocity rank. Optional. |
Max SKUs |
The maximum number of SKUs that should be stored in the locations where you wish to create new primary item locations; however, the system does not restrict placement above this number. Leave this field blank if you do not wish to restrict the locations that display on the Create New Item Warehouse/Locations Screen based on maximum SKUs. Numeric, 1 position; optional. |
Option |
Procedure |

See Allow Multiple Primary Item Locations? for additional processing information. Item codes are defined in and validated against the Item table; if you prompt on this field, the system advances you to the Select Item/SKU window which displays items/SKUs that do not have a primary primary location defined in the SKU table. Leave this field blank if you do not want to create an item location for this location. Note: The system does not validate that the location class assigned to the item matches the location class assigned to the location. Alphanumeric, 12 positions; optional. |
|
A SKU code for the item you wish to assign to the primary location. • You can only enter an item/SKU that currently does not have a primary primary location defined in the SKU table. • If the Allow Multiple Primary Item Locations (D12) system control value is set to NOT ALLOW or blank, the system prevents you from assigning the item/SKU to additional locations: Multiple primary locations not allowed for this item/SKU. See Allow Multiple Primary Item Locations? for additional processing information. SKU codes are defined in and validated against the SKU table; if you prompt on this field, the system advances you to the Select Item/SKU window which displays items/SKUs that do not have a primary primary location defined in the SKU table. Leave this field blank if you do not want to create an item location for this location. Alphanumeric, 12 positions; optional. |
|
The actual shipping weight of the item. The system can use this value to calculate carton weights and determine shipping charges. If you enter an item (and SKU if the item contains SKUs) and select OK, to system defaults the shipping weight defined for the SKU; if a shipping weight is not defined for the SKU, the system defaults the shipping weight defined for the item. However, you can override it. If the item contains SKUs, updates Weight override in the SKU table; if the item does not contain SKUs, updates Ship weight in the Item table. Multiple ship weights for the same item/SKU? If you define a different ship weight for the same item/SKU for more than one item location record on this screen, the system updates the item/SKU with the ship weight that the system processes last (the lowest record that displays for the item/SKU on the screen). See New Item Location Slotting Examples for examples on how the system determines the updates to perform to the item and SKU. Numeric, 7 positions with a 3-place decimal; optional. |
|
The actual selling weight of the item. The system uses this value to calculate the freight charge on an item when the freight method on the order is set to By Item or Flat Rt/Item. If you enter an item (and SKU if the item contains SKUs) and select OK, to system defaults the selling weight defined for the SKU; if a selling weight is not defined for the SKU, the system defaults the selling weight defined for the item. However, you can override it. If the item contains SKUs, updates Selling weight override in the SKU table; if the item does not contain SKUs, updates Selling weight in the Item table. Multiple sell weights for the same item/SKU? If you define a different sell weight for the same item/SKU for more than one item location record on this screen, the system updates the item/SKU with the sell weight that the system processes last (the lowest record that displays for the item/SKU on the screen). |
The number of units that fit in a case. If you enter an item and select OK, the system defaults the pieces per case quantity defined for the item; however, you can override it. Updates Pieces per case in the Item table. Multiple case quantities for the same item/SKU? If you define a different case quantity for the same item/SKU for more than one item location record on this screen, the system updates the item/SKU with the case quantity that the system processes last (the lowest record that displays for the item/SKU on the screen). See New Item Location Slotting Examples for examples on how the system determines the updates to perform to the item and SKU. Numeric, 5 positions; optional. |
|
The item’s recommended minimum number of units to store in the primary location. If you enter an item and select OK, the system defaults the minimum quantity defined for the item; however, you can override it. Updates Min qty for location in the SKU table. Multiple minimum quantities for the same item/SKU? If you define a different minimum quantity for the same item/SKU for more than one item location record on this screen, the system updates the item/SKU with the minimum quantity that the system processes last (the lowest record that displays for the item/SKU on the screen. See New Item Location Slotting Examples for examples on how the system determines the updates to perform to the item and SKU. Numeric, 7 positions; optional. |
|
The item’s recommended maximum number of units to store in the primary location. If you enter an item and select OK, the system defaults the maximum quantity defined for the item; however, you can override it. Updates Max qty for location in the SKU table. Multiple maximum quantities for the same item/SKU? If you define a different maximum quantity for the same item/SKU for more than one item location record on this screen, the system updates the item/SKU with the maximum quantity that the system processes last (the lowest record that displays for the item/SKU on the screen. See New Item Location Slotting Examples for examples on how the system determines the updates to perform to the item and SKU. Numeric, 7 positions; optional. |
|
The UPC code defined for the item/SKU. A message similar to the following indicates if the UPC code has already been assigned to an item: UPC Code already exists for item: XXXXXX. Note: • Include any leading zeros. For example: if the UPC code is 06012011, enter 06012011 and not 6012011. • You can define a UPC code for an item only if a UPC type is defined in the Default UPC Type for Slotting New Items (L84) system control value. Creates a record in the Item UPC table. Alphanumeric, 14 positions; display-only if the Default UPC Type for Slotting New Items (L84) is blank; otherwise, optional. |

New Item Location Slotting Process
Use the following steps to create new records in the Item Location table, based on your entries on the Create New Item Warehouse/Locations Screen.
1. |
For each location where you wish to create an item location record, enter the Item to place in the location. If the item contains SKUs, you must also enter the SKU of the item. You can prompt on the Item or SKU field to advance to the Select Item/SKU window which displays items/SKUs that do not have a primary primary location defined in the SKU table. |
2. |
Optionally, enter a Ship Wgt, Sell Wgt, Case Qty, Min Qty, and Max Qty to update these values for the item/SKU. |
3. |
If a UPC type is defined in the Default UPC Type for Slotting New Items (L84) system control value, you can also enter a UPC Code to create an Item UPC record. |
4. |
If you wish to create
another item location for a specified location, click the icon ( |
5. |
Select OK to validate your entries. For each item location record, the system validates that: • The item is a valid item in the Item table. • If the item contains SKUs, a SKU is defined and is a valid SKU in the SKU table. • The item/SKU you enter currently does not have a primary primary location defined in the SKU table. • The UPC code you enter is not already assigned to an item/SKU. |
6. |
Select Process. For each row that passes validation, the system: • Creates a record in the Item Warehouse table for the specified Warehouse, if one is not already defined. • Creates a record in the Item Location table for the specified Location and Item/SKU. • Creates a record in the Item UPC table, based on the entered UPC code and the default UPC type and UPC vendor. If a UPC code is not defined, the system does not create a record in this table. • Updates the record in the SKU table. • Warehouse: Updated with the specified Warehouse. • Location: Updated with the specified Location. • Weight override: If the item contains SKUs, updated with the specified Ship Wgt. If a ship weight is not defined, the system updates this field to 0. • Selling weight override: If the item contains SKUs, updated with the specified Sell Wgt. If a sell weight is not defined, the system updates this field to 0. • Min qty for location: Updated with the specified Min Qty. If a minimum quantity is not defined, the system updates this field to 0. • Max qty for location: Updated with the specified Max Qty. If a maximum quantity is not defined, the system updates this field to 0. • Updates the record in the Item table. • Pieces per case: Updated with the specified Case Qty. If a case quantity is not defined, the system updates this field to 0. • Ship weight: If the item does not contain SKUs, updated with the specified Ship Wgt. If a ship weight is not defined, the system updates this field to 0. • Selling weight: If the item does not contain SKUs, updated with the specified Sell Wgt. If a sell weight is not defined, the system updates this field to 0. |
Allow Multiple Primary Item Locations?
The setting of the Allow Multiple Primary Item Locations (D12) system control value controls whether you can define multiple primary locations when you create an Item Location record.
If set to:
NOT ALLOW or blank |
The system advances you to the Create New Item Warehouse Error window and prevents you from assigning the item to additional locations: Multiple primary locations not allowed for this item/SKU. |
CONFIRM or ALLOW |
The system lets you create an additional location for an item automatically without sending a warning or confirmation. |
Item and SKU updates: If you enter the same item/SKU for more than one item location record, the system updates the record in the SKU table and Item table with the item/SKU values for the item location record that the system processes last (the lowest record that displays for the item/SKU on the screen).
For more information: See New Item Location Slotting Examples for examples of the new item location slotting process.
