layer

  1. Organizes data on an edge perpendicular to the edge's orientation. An edge consists of one or more layers. For example, on a horizontal column edge, layers are grouped physically and run in vertical rows. Layers can also be grouped logically through metadata. The physical number of a specified layer does not necessarily match its logical number.

  2. As a parameter in the data retrieval APIs, the zero-based location of a specified layer within an edge. Layer 0 represents the outermost layer.
