6. Copying Objects To The BI Beans Catalog

Exercise Objectives

In this exercise, you will learn how to copy the presentations that you have created to a persistent BI Beans Catalog. Saving presentation in the Catalog lets other users access your reports from their applications. Ensure that you have installed the BI Beans Catalog as described in Installing the BI Beans Catalog.

Exercise Description

For better security management and application deployment, copy your presentations to the BI Beans Catalog in a persistent database. Objects that are stored in the BI Beans Catalog can be shared with other users and are managed professionally within the database. Also, your deployed application can reference objects in the Catalog without additional configuration. Therefore, you should copy your objects to the Catalog before deployment.

This exercise introduces you to the basic steps for copying objects to the Catalog using Oracle JDeveloper wizards.

Exercise Tasks

Copying objects

To copy objects to the BI Beans Catalog

  1. In the System-Navigator pane, right-click Project1BIDesigner1 under Project1.jpr, and choose Copy Objects to Remote Catalog.
  2. In the Copy Objects to Remote Catalog Wizard, read the introduction on the Welcome page and choose Next to continue.
  3. You can either specify an existing connection or add a new connection. If you have an existing Catalog connection defined, select that connection and skip to Step 5.
  4. To add a new connection, use the following procedure:
    1. Choose New.
    2. In the Connection Wizard, read the introduction on the Welcome page and choose Next to continue.
    3. Accept the default connection name (for example, CatalogConnection1) and connection type Oracle(JDBC). Choose Next.
    4. Enter Username and Password, and choose Next. Enter the BI Beans Catalog schema owner's credentials for the username and password. Use BIBCAT as the username and password for the Catalog that you installed in Getting Started.
    5. Note: The username and password must be in uppercase.

    6. Enter thin for Driver type, enter host name, JDBC port, and SID for the database connection. Choose Next.
    7. Choose Test connection.
    8. Choose Finish if the connection is successful to close the Connection Wizard.
  5. Enter BIBCAT as the Catalog User and choose Test. This is the default user created with the Catalog.
  6. Choose Next in the Copy Objects to Remote Catalog wizard if the connection is successful.
  7. Select the following three objects: Quota Variance, Sales Analysis Crosstab, and Sales Analysis Graph.
  8. Ensure that the Overwrite existing objects ... box at the bottom of the objects tree is checked. The wizard will then overwrite any existing objects on the Catalog.
  9. Ensure that the Update the runtime ... box is checked. The wizard will then update the runtime settings so that applications will reference objects from the Catalog.
  10. Choose Finish to copy the objects.
  11. After the copying process has successfully completed, review the summary messages to ensure that there are no errors, and choose Close.
  12. To verify that the objects have copied successfully, in the System-Navigator, under Project1.jpr, right-click Project1BIDesigner1 and choose Browse Remote Catalog.
  13. Select the Catalog that you specified when you copied objects to the remote Catalog (for example, CatalogConnection1), accept the default user, and choose OK. This runs the BI Explorer utility.
  14. BI Explorer provides BI Catalog functionality that is similar to the functionality that Windows Explorer provides for your local file system. Click F5 to refresh the contents and you should see the copied objects in the BI Catalog.
  15. From the File menu, choose Exit to exit the Explorer.
  16. In JDeveloper, from the File menu, choose Save All to save your work.

Exercise Summary

In this exercise, you learned how simple it is to copy objects to the BI Beans Catalog. By storing objects in a persistent database, you facilitate object management and deployment.
