Percent Variance Calculation

The Calculation Type panel accepts input for the following items for a percent variance calculation:

Base measure -- Select the measure that you want to subtract from the target measure.

Target measure -- Select the measure that you want to use for comparison with the base measure.

Number Format -- Select one of the default number formats to use for this calculation or choose Options to specify another format.

Options -- Displays the Number Format dialog, in which you can specify a format for the calculation.

This type of calculation applies to measures only.

Formula Description

Formula

The formula for this calculation is:

(x-y)/y

Description

This formula is used to calculate the percent difference between a measure and a target for that measure.

Example

An example of this calculation is:

(Base - Target)/Target

or

Percent variance between Sales and Quota = (Sales - Quota)/Quota

Suppose that the sales value is 100 and the quota value is 110, which is calculated as follows:

100-110/110 = -9.09%

The percent variance is -9.09%, down relative to the target quota of 110.
