Displaying Custom Strings and System Strings

The following describes how Custom Strings and System Strings are displayed in Admin mode and while defining Sheets and User Defined Reports (UDRs).

Note

Multi-select data elements (DEs), user-entered data in business processes (BPs), attribute forms of various Managers, and similar runtime elements cannot be translated.
For a DE to be translatable, it must be based on a data definition (DD) that defines both values and labels.

Content displayed in the UI (also known as System Strings) cannot be modified by users. System Strings are available in different languages and are displayed based on user preferences.

Menus
Alerts
Errors

In contrast, user-created content (also known as Custom Strings) can be translated into different languages.

Examples of Custom Strings

BP name
DE label
Drop-down (pull-down) values
Radio button
Text in lines
Navigation log names

System Strings are translated according to the language set in the User Preferences window.

Custom Strings are translated based on the specifications defined for the source string in the XLIFF file.

When System Strings and Custom Strings are combined (concatenated), such as in a form:

The System String portion is translated according to user preferences.
The Custom String portion is translated based on the XLIFF file specifications.

As a result, different fields within the same object may appear in different languages.

In general, translated Custom Strings are not displayed in Admin mode, except in the following cases:

Attribute forms
If a translated Custom String exists for an attribute form, it is displayed in Admin mode.

Example: If DE named "Building Name" has a German translation, the details page displays the German value in Admin mode.
Pages shared between User mode and Admin mode
If translated Custom Strings are available, they are displayed in Admin mode and remain consistent when switching to User mode. This applies to:
- Code-based Configurable Manager Sheet templates
- Record-based Configurable Manager Sheet templates
- Asset Class templates
- Shell Dashboard templates
- UDR templates
