Understanding Product Kits

A product kit consists of a fixed set of components that are sold as a unit. A product kit is not a stocked inventory item, however its components may or may not be. The fixed set of components are not required to ship together unless specified in the kit definition.

Product Kits are defined in the Product Definition - Definition page when you select the Product Kit check box. Product kits, unlike other product IDs, are not added to the item table. The Item ID field is unavailable for entry once you've selected the Product Kit option. After identifying a product as a kit, establish its components on the Product Kit Summary page.

When an order with a product kit is placed in the demand fulfillment table (IN_DEMAND) the product kit ID is not a demand line. Each kit component that is an inventory item is placed in IN_DEMAND as a separate demand line with a field identifying the product kit ID.

This topic discusses how a product kit is handled within PeopleSoft Inventory. A product kit:

  • Can be placed on a sales order within PeopleSoft Order Management and then posted to the IN_DEMAND table in PeopleSoft Inventory for fulfillment.

  • Can be placed on a material stock request in PeopleSoft Inventory.

  • Can be altered by the Kit Re-Explode process.

  • Can be released for picking component by component or held back until complete kits can be released together.

  • Can be placed on the Order Release pick plan as individual kit component demand lines or grouped together under a product kit heading.

  • Can be identified on each component kit demand line on the Fulfillment, Shortage, and Pegging Workbenches. In addition, the product kit IDs of the kit component demand lines are identified on several Inventory fulfillment inquiry pages.

Note: If the delivery management feature has been enabled, then all components of a product kit must be within one delivery ID.
