Understanding Shortage Handling in PeopleSoft Inventory

The Shortage Workbench is an online component enables you to monitor and control stock shortages and other fulfillment issues. Users can view shortages and take action to fill the outstanding orders. The Shortage Workbench only selects:

  • Demand lines that are in the Unfulfilled or Releasable state.

  • Work order demand lines in the Pending state that have been committed to inventory's demand fulfillment table.

Work order demand lines that are on a pick plan are not selected by the Shortage Workbench.

The Shortage Workbench can perform several actions on a set of orders or a set of demand lines, including:

  • Release a demand line with stock shortages to the Releasable state enabling the shortage to be viewed and dealt with in the picking and shipping processes.

  • Soft-reserve stock.

The reservation of the demand line can be done with or without the reservation rules.

  • Set a demand line from the Unfulfilled state to the Releasable state and execute any backorder rules.

  • Set the demand line back to the Unfulfilled state from the Releasable state.

  • Create, cancel, or approve backorders.

Note: If the Create Adhoc Requisitions check box is selected on the Setup Fulfillment page, then the creation of a backorder in the Shortage Workbench will create an adhoc replenishment request for PeopleSoft Purchasing.

  • Unreserving demand lines with soft-reserve items that are in an Unfulfilled or Releasable state.

  • Unpromising demand lines with ATP items that are in an Unfulfilled or Releasable state.

  • De-allocating demand lines that have been pre-allocated or lot-allocated and are in an Unfulfilled or Releasable state. This includes pre-allocations created by the pegging feature.

  • Create a pre-allocation on a demand line in the Unfulfilled or Releasable state.

    See Understanding Allocations and Pre-Allocations.

  • Approve stock requests.

  • Approve partial quantity fulfillment for sales orders and materials stock requests.

  • Override the soft-reserved, promised, or picking quantity of a demand line.

  • Reserve or unreserve work order demand lines from PeopleSoft Maintenance Management.

  • De-allocating work order demand lines that have been pre-allocated or lot-allocated. These lines are in a pending state.

Note: If the Reserve Online check box has been selected on the Setup Fulfillment-Reservation page, then the Reserve Materials process is not used. You must use the Shortage Workbench to reserve all demand lines.

A template will restrict users in the Shortage Workbench to the proper actions and fields for their job positions.

In addition, by demand line, the Shortage Workbench gives you access to:

  1. The Stock Request inquiry page to view the details and status of a particular order line.

  2. The Item/Product Availability inquiry page to check item quantities and view future supply

  3. The Pegging Workbench to peg to anticipated supply at the demand lines level and the Pegging Inquiry to view existing peg chains.

To access the pegging pages from the Shortage Workbench, the user must be defined on the User Security pegging setup page and the action must be enabled on the workbench template.

  4. The Kit Display inquiry page to view the details of a product kit entered on a sales order or material stock request.
