Exporting and Importing CSV and Excel Level or Space Templates and Records

You can use CSV and Microsoft Excel files to create level or space records and to import drawing files. After you have edited and saved the exported file, you can import it back into Unifier. During the import process, the system validates the data. If the data passes validation, the new records are created. If the data fails the validation, you can view or download a text file summarizing the errors.

To export a template file:

  1. Go to the shell tab, and switch to User mode.
  2. In the left Navigator, select Space Manager, and then select Levels or [space type].
  3. From the toolbar, select Actions, and then select Export CSV Template or Export Microsoft Excel Template.

The exported template is based on the Integration interface design of Level or Space that was created in uDesigner.

  4. Save the exported file to your desktop.

To modify an exported template file:

  1. Open the file in Microsoft Excel or a compatible software application.
  2. Add data to the file, one record per row.

Important: Do not add, move, or delete columns or change the structure of the file.

  3. Save the file.

Note: Excel 2003 cannot handle CSV files with 15 or more rows. In CSV files, columns are separated with commas. With Excel, when you open a CSV file that has empty columns at the end of the file, Excel drops the additional commas from the 15th row onward, resulting in an error when you try to import the file. To work around this problem, do one of the following:

    • Add your data to the CSV file in Excel, and save the file. Then reopen the file in a text editor such as Notepad, find the rows that have the missing commas, and add the additional commas to these rows.
    • Use a text editor instead of Excel to modify column values in the CSV file.

To import an updated template file:

  1. Go to the shell tab, and switch to User mode.
  2. In the left Navigator, select Space Manager, and then select Levels or [space type].
  3. From the toolbar, select Actions, and then select Import.
  4. Locate and select the file.

The system checks the file for the following items to make sure that valid records are created:

    • The file format of the imported file matches the interface design created in uDesigner.
    • You are importing into the same log from which you exported the CSV template file.
    • The required fields contain data in the correct format.

If an error occurs, a confirmation message gives you the option to save a file that lists the errors.

To view the import validation error file:

  1. When the Confirmation message appears, select Yes.
  2. Select Open to open the file, or select Save to save the file to your local machine.

The error file is a CSV file.

  3. To view the full contents of the listed error, select a cell.
  4. After fixing the errors, use this file to re-import the records.
