Gendata Single-Step Multi-Print

What changed?

This functionality may not be in wide use, but it is technically possible to do a single-step print process from Gendata and have output generated to different print types. For instance, one recipient may print to PDF output while another prints to Xerox metacode output.

It was discovered that this multi-output print mechanism had several flaws not been previously reported – thus the assumption that the functionality is not widely used.

Trailing Batch Banners

When switching print types during single-step and using trailing batch banners, only one transaction was getting the banner instead of all batches that defined the trailing banner.

Print Closure

Certain print output expects a particular closing sequence to be included at the end of the document.  Testing does not show that printers reported any errors from this omission, but changes have been made to ensure all print output have opportunity to include appropriate closing commands.

For instance, Postscript output normally expects the %EOF token. If postscript was one of the output types used in a single-step multi-output print situation, those files many not include the expected closure commands. Now these should all close appropriately.

When the option to output a print log is specified, the log included the original unique name even if using one of the optional methods to rename output. The log should now shows the final name if changed by configuration.

In addition, the multi-file print log would report a line for each recipient even though some recipients may skip printing. The log should now only reflect those recipients that generate output.

Why did it change?

These discrepancies were found in the normal course of QA testing.

How does this affect you?

This change could affects if you are using single-step printing to multiple print types and one or more of those types require a closing command. Although these will be recognizable differences when comparing the files in a text or binary compare, it is believed that these updates are proper.

Are changes needed to my setup for this change to take effect?

No.
