People & Groups Basics

This section offers information about people and groups in Oracle Social Network. It includes the following subsections:

What is the People & Groups page?

The People & Groups page lists the people and groups registered with Oracle Social Network, including:

  • People recommended to you

  • People you follow

  • People following you

  • Your contacts

  • The groups you are a member of

  • The groups you have marked as a favorite

What can I do on the People & Groups page?

Here is a short list of things you can do on the People & Groups page:

What does it mean to follow someone?

Following someone:

  • Adds them to your list of contacts

  • Lets you post messages to the followed person's wall

  • Includes information about their wall activity in your view of the Overview page.

  • Includes information about the activity on their walls in your daily email digest.

What is the difference between someone I follow and a contact?

Marking someone as a contact makes it easy to find them quickly under Contacts on the Social Bar and on the People & Groups page, when you filter it to show just your contacts.

Following people adds them as contacts, lets you post messages to their profile walls, and lets you track their wall activity on the Overview page. You can also set up your notifications to receive information about the people you follow in your Digest.

You can stop following someone, and still keep them as a contact. When you stop following someone, you can no longer post messages to their walls or receive a digest of their wall activity.

What are groups?

Groups organize people into a single entity: the group. A group can be added to or removed from a Conversation in a single step. Or you can start a Conversation that instantly includes all members of a group. Like individual profiles, groups have their own identities, which include their own walls and profile pictures. On a group wall, group members can post messages and content of interest to the group.

For more information, see:

How can I see who belongs to a group?

Go to a detailed view of the group (see "How do I navigate to a group's wall?"), and in the right column, click Show a list of all group members. This shows the people and groups that are members of this group.

If you want to also see who are in the groups that belong to this group, instead click Add People to open the Update Members dialog. Members are shown in the right column. Click the Expand icon to the left of a listed group to see its members.

Is there a way to see what groups a group belongs to?

Yes! Go to a detailed view of a group (see "How do I navigate to a group's wall?"), and look on the right side of the page under Belongs to ….

When you invite people who are not from your company, like partners and customers, Oracle Social Network treats them as guests. Guests can do things like creating Conversations and adding people to them, but guests cannot invite people to join Oracle Social Network.
