Set individual chart properties

Before you begin

Display or create a view, as explained in Display views.

When you create a chart, it is created with default visual and control properties. For example:

When you create a chart, a default name is assigned.
When you drag a metric onto a chart, a name is assigned to that metric by default that appears in the legend.
The Y-axis units label is empty by default.
The chart has a default set of colors for labels, X- and Y-axis lines, text, background, and highlighting.

You can set additional properties that control the Y-axis range and the thresholds to be used for highlighting metrics whose values fall outside a given range. You can also change the default display properties of individual metrics in a chart.

When you click the chart edit button, you can edit the chart title, y-axis units label, and each of the metric names. Note you can also change the y-axis units and chart title by means of the Chart Properties dialog box.

To change the chart name:
1. Select the chart.
2. Select the chart edit tool.
3. Enter the new name in the chart name field.
To change the name of one or more metrics:
1. Select the chart.
2. Select the chart edit tool.
3. Enter the new name in the chart legend that corresponds to the metric.
You can also change a metric's name, or other display characteristics, by using the metric legend menu. For more information, see Customize metric display properties.
To change the Y-axis units label:
1. Select the chart.
2. Select the chart edit tool.
3. Enter the new label in the field below the chart title.
To set colors used in the chart:
1. Select the chart.
2. Select the chart menu and choose Properties.
  The Chart Properties dialog box is displayed.
3. Set color values for one or more of the following, as desired, by specifying the hexadecimal HTML color code:
  - Foreground — For text (labels, legend, chart title, and so on), X and Y axis lines, and gauge outlines
  - Background — For the chart background, where appropriate for the chart type
  - Highlight — For any metric that crosses a threshold. For time series charts, the threshold is highlighted by shading the background using this color.
4. Click OK.

To set maximum and minimum threshold values, which cause a metric to become highlighted in the chart when a data point value falls outside a specific range, see Display thresholds in charts.

Result

The changes you make to an individual chart are automatically persisted and in effect only for your user account and only in the current domain. They are available to you the next time you launch the Monitoring Dashboard. Note, however, that polled metric values that are displayed in built-in and custom views are not persisted after you close the Monitoring Dashboard window.
