Start Managed Servers in Standby mode

Before you begin

  1. Start the domain's Administration Server.
  2. Enable the domain-wide administration port. See Configure the domain-wide administration port.
  3. Specify the Standby startup mode. See Specify a startup mode.

You can start a server instance so that at the end of its startup cycle, the server is in the STANDBY state. In this state, the server listens for administrative requests only on the domain-wide administration port and only accepts life cycle commands that transition the server instance to either the RUNNING or SHUTDOWN state. Other administration requests are not accepted. Starting a server instance in standby is a method of keeping it available as a "hot" backup, a useful capability in high-availability environments.

To start Managed Servers in the STANDBY state:

  1. In the left pane of the Console, expand Environment and select Servers.
  2. In the Servers table, click the name of the Managed Server instance you want to start in the STANDBY state.
  3. Select Control > Start/Stop.
  4. In the Server Status table, select the check box next to the name of the server instance and click Start.
  5. On the Server Life Cycle Assistant page, click Yes to confirm.

For information on how the server transitions from STANDBY to the RUNNING or SHUTDOWN state, see Understanding Server Life Cycle.

  6. To view status information related to this task, click the Task link in the Status of Last Action column.

After you finish

When you are ready for this server to receive non-administrative requests, see Resume a server.
