Using persistent SSD block storage In some sites, SSD block storage is now available. You can attach these persistent SSD block storage volumes to instances as either boot disks or data disks.
Creating objects using the visual object editor You can now create some objects in the visual object editor by dragging an object from the palette on the left and dropping it on the canvas in the center. You can also update or delete some objects in the visual object editor. See Managing Resources Using the Visual Object Editor in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Generating screen captures of a running instance You can use the REST API to start screen capture of a running instance. The screen capture files are stored in the associated Oracle Storage Cloud Service account. See REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Selecting IP reservations for IP networks while creating an instance using the Create Instance wizard You can now select IP reservations from the public IP pool or the cloud IP pool in the Network page of the Create Instance wizard. These IP reservations are used to access instance interfaces on IP networks. See Creating an Instance from the Instances Page in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Updating an IP network interface while creating an instance using the Create Instance wizard When you use the Create Instance wizard to create an instance, if required, you can update an IP network interface while configuring the network settings. See Creating an Instance from the Instances Page in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Feature / Change Description
Using the orchestrations v2 REST API to create and manage multiple interdependent objects Orchestrations v2 provide a modular and flexible approach to creating and managing multiple resources through a single JSON file. Orchestrations v2 are similar to orchestrations v1, but they also provide certain benefits over orchestrations v1 functionality. Using orchestrations v2 you can create references across interdependent objects, so that entire hierarchies can be created or restored without manually ensuring that dependencies are satisfied. You can update some attributes of objects while the orchestration is running. You can also manage the state and lifecycle of each instance in an orchestration, without disturbing the state of other resources. See About Orchestrations v2 in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Shutting down and restarting instances Instance life cycle management operations have been enhanced to allow you to shut down an instance that uses a persistent bootable storage volume. Earlier, you could delete an instance by stopping the instance orchestration. This would stop all the instances and other resources defined in the orchestration. Now you can shut down an instance without changing the state of other objects in the orchestration. You can restart the instance later on. The instance resumes with the same configuration and data. See Shutting Down and Restarting an Instance in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Using the REST API to set up a VPN connection using VPN as a Service (VPNaaS) You can set up a VPN connection between your data center and IP networks in your Oracle Compute Cloud Service site using VPN as a Service (VPNaaS). VPNaaS uses IPSec-based tunnels to carry encrypted traffic between your data center and your instances in Oracle Compute Cloud Service. You can set up a VPNaaS connection using the REST API. See Setting Up VPN Using VPNaaS in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Building your own Windows images You can now use your own license to build private Windows images and add them to your Oracle Compute Cloud Service account. You can use these images to create new Windows instances in Oracle Compute Cloud Service. For help in building your image and using it to create instances, see Tutorial icon Migrating a Virtual Machine Running Microsoft Windows Server 2008 or 2012 from VMware to Oracle Compute Cloud Service. For information about Windows licensing, see the product FAQ.
Configuring IP network interfaces while creating instances using the Create Instance wizard The Network page of the Create Instance wizard is enhanced to allow you to specify various attributes of an interface to be added to an IP network. You can select the IP network you want to add each interface to and specify a static IP address if required. You can also specify a name for the vNIC and select the vNICsets that you want to add each vNIC to. If you don’t add your instance to the shared network, you can select an interface on an IP network as the default gateway. See Creating an Instance from the Instances Page in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Creating a delayed instance snapshot When you create an instance using a nonpersistent boot disk, you can take a snapshot of the instance to create machine image based on that instance. Now, when you generate the snapshot from the web console, you can select an option to defer the snapshot until the instance is about to shut down. This allows you to continue making changes to the instance and ensure that the snapshot captures all the changes you’ve made. Selecting an IP pool while creating an IP reservation for IP networks You can now select an IP pool when using the web console to create an IP reservation for IP networks. Earlier, you could select an IP pool only by using the REST API. See Reserving a Public IP Address for IP Networks in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Attaching NVMe SSD data disks to instances You can now use NVMe SSD disks as nonpersistent data disks attached to your instances. These disks are attached as raw block devices with the device name /dev/xvdz on an Oracle Linux instance. After your instance is created, format your NVMe SSD disk with the required file system and then mount it on your instance.
New shapes available New general purpose, high-memory, and high I/O shapes are available in some sites. See About Machine Images and Shapes in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Creating storage volume snapshots from the Visualization page The Visualization page now allows you to create storage volume snapshots. See Managing Resources Using the Visual Object Editor in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
New page added to the Create Instance wizard to configure network settings The fields on the Instance page of the Create Instance wizard have been reorganized and the fields related to network configuration have been moved to a new Network page.

Associating public IP addresses with an instance added to IP networks (release 17.1.2) If you create an instance with multiple virtual interfaces and add those interfaces to IP networks, then you can associate a public IP address with each interface of the instance. You can also associate an IP address with an interface to enable that interface to be accessible to other services in Oracle cloud. See Workflow for Assigning a Public IP Address to a Network Interface in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

You can also use the web console to associate a public IP addresses to an instance that has an interface on an IP network. See Managing Public IP Addresses in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Applying access control lists to virtual interfaces on IP networks (release 17.1.2) You can control the flow of traffic within and across the IP networks in your account by defining security rules and creating access control lists (ACLs). ACLs apply security rules to specified sets of virtual interfaces. See Workflow for Applying Access Control Lists in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

You can also use the web console to create security rules and apply them to virtual interfaces using ACLs. See Managing Security Rules for IP Networks and Managing ACLs in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Viewing and updating resources using a visual object editor (release 17.1.2) You can go to the Visualization page on the web console to see a visual representation of the objects in your account. See Managing Resources Using the Visual Object Editor in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Providing high I/O local storage to your instances using NVM Express SSD disks (release 17.1.2) You can select high I/O shapes to create instances. These shapes enable you to provide local, ephemeral NVMe SSD boot disks for your instances. These shapes have a fixed disk size of 400 GB per OCPU. See About Machine Images and Shapes in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Creating containers in Oracle Storage Cloud Service by using the Oracle Compute Cloud Service REST API or in orchestrations (release 17.1.2) You can create containers in your associated Oracle Storage Cloud Service instance by specifying the /integrations/osscontainer object in a REST API call or in an orchestration. See Orchestration Attributes for integrations/osscontainer in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Updating or deleting an SSH key that’s associated with one or more instances (release 17.1.2) You can now use the web console to update or delete an SSH public key even if it’s associated with an instance. Earlier the update and delete operations were disabled for keys that were associated with one or more instances.
Deleting nested orchestrations along with the master orchestration (release 17.1.2) When you delete a master orchestration from the web console, you can now opt to delete all nested orchestrations as well. See Deleting an Orchestration in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Adding a public IP address to an existing instance from the instance details page (release 17.1.2) You can add a public IP address to an instance on the instance details page. Earlier, you could do this only while creating or updating an IP reservation on the IP Reservations page.
Setting up a VPN connection to a multitenant site using the web console (release 16.4.6) You can now set up a VPN connection to a multitenant site using the web console. Earlier, you could do this by using App Net Manager. VPN connections to a multitenant site use a Corente Services Gateway instance in Oracle Compute Cloud Service and any supported third-party device in your data center. See About Setting Up VPN in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Enabling instance-level metrics collection (release 16.4.6) The opc-init package has been enhanced to include the OPC Agent. You can enable this agent on your instance, to collect accurate instance-level memory utilization metrics. See Enabling Instance Metrics Collection in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Updating orchestrations using the web console (release 16.4.6) You can update a stopped orchestration directly in the web console. You don’t need to download the orchestration file to update it. See Updating an Orchestration in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Enabling active-active HA support in your VPN connection You can set up a VPN connection between a third-party device in your data center and the IP networks in your Oracle Compute Cloud Service site using a Corente Services Gateway instance. In this scenario, if you configure two such VPN tunnels, then you can enable active-active high availability (HA) between these tunnels, so that if either tunnel fails, traffic is routed over the second tunnel. See Configuring Active-Active HA in Setting Up VPN from a Third-Party Gateway to an IP Network in Oracle Cloud.
Adding an SSH key from a file When you add or update an SSH public key on Oracle Compute Cloud Service, instead of copying the key value from a file, you can now select the file. See Adding an SSH Public Key in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Creating a custom Oracle Linux machine image which supports multiple network interfaces The tutorial for creating a private Oracle Linux machine image is updated with instructions to implement support for multiple network interfaces on each instance. When you create an instance using this image, you can attach the instance to a maximum of eight networks. See Tutorial icon Building a Custom Oracle Linux 6.7 Image with the LAMP Stack.

Creating IP networks You can create IP networks and add instances to one or more IP networks.

An IP network allows you to specify a range of IP addresses that can be associated with your instances. These IP addresses aren’t part of the common pool of private IP addresses used by all tenants in a multitenant site. You have complete control over how private IP addresses are assigned to your instances as well as over the network configuration. Using IP networks, you can create a network architecture that mirrors and extends the architecture you use in your on-premises data center. See About IP Networks in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Oracle-provided images enhanced to support multiple vNICs All Oracle-provided Oracle Linux images have been updated to support multiple virtual network interfaces for each instance. Now when you use Oracle-provided images to create an instance, you can add each instance to up to eight IP networks, inclusive of the shared network. This enables you to take advantage of setting up your own IP networks.
New images available New images are available for creating instances. To identify the new images, look for the version in the image name. See About Oracle-Provided Linux Images in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Scheduled backups You can schedule backups of storage volumes at specified intervals. The backups are stored remotely in Oracle Storage Cloud Service. When required, you can use these backups to restore a storage volume in the same site. See Scheduling Backups of Storage Volumes and Restoring from Backups in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Additional platform support for the CLI You can install the CLI on additional platforms. See System Requirements and Supported Platforms in Command Line Reference for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Creating remote snapshots using the CLI You can use the CLI to create and manage storage volume snapshots. See Storage Volume Snapshots in Command Line Reference for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
VPN for Windows instances You can use VPN to connect to Windows instances using a Corente Services Gateway in Oracle Cloud. See About Setting Up VPN Using a Third-Party VPN Device in Setting Up VPN Using a Third-Party VPN Device or About Setting Up VPN Using Corente Services Gateway in Setting Up VPN Using Corente Services Gateway.
Create Instance wizard now shows Marketplace images You can now create an instance using an Oracle Cloud Marketplace image directly from the Create Instance wizard. See Creating an Instance from the Instances Page in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
opc-init can be used in private images The opc-init package is used in Oracle-provided images to automate instance configuration and initialization. This package is now also available for download from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/cloud/downloads/opc-init-3096035.html. To use the opc-init scripts in private images, you can now download and install this package while creating your private machine images. See Automating Instance Initialization Using opc-init in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
The Monitoring page has moved You can now access the Monitoring page from the CLOUD SERVICES menu, by clicking the dashboard menu button near the upper left corner of the page. Earlier, the Monitoring tab was displayed at the top of the page.
Tutorial for migrating virtual machines from VMware to Oracle Compute Cloud Service A new tutorial is available to help you migrate Oracle Linux virtual machines from VMware to Oracle Compute Cloud Service. Command Line Interface (CLI) tool released You can now use a CLI client to provision and manage your Oracle Compute Cloud Service resources. See Command Line Reference for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Colocated snapshots available in all accounts Earlier, the option to create colocated storage volume snapshots was available only in the Dedicated Compute offering. Now this option is available in all accounts. See Backing Up and Restoring Storage Volumes Using Snapshots in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Implementing shared file storage over NFSv4 You can use Oracle Storage Cloud Software Appliance – Cloud Distribution to provide highly scalable, low-cost, reliable shared storage in the cloud for your Oracle Linux instances. See About Oracle Storage Cloud Software Appliance – Cloud Distribution in Using Oracle Storage Cloud Software Appliance.
Inbound policy of a security list is always DENY Earlier, the web console allowed you to specify the inbound policy of a security list as PERMIT, which effectively turned off the firewall and allowed access to all instances in that security list. This option is now removed in the web console. The inbound policy of a security list is always DENY. See About Security Lists in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Updating the description of a private machine image After you’ve registered a private machine image, you can now update the description of the machine image. See Updating a Private Machine Image in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Patching guidelines Documented the best practices for applying the latest security patches to your instances. See Securing the Operating System on Your Instances in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Resizing an instance You can now change the shape of an instance after you’ve created the instance. See Resizing an Instance in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Storage volume snapshots available to all accounts You can backup and restore storage volumes using storage volume snapshots. Earlier, this option was available only in the Dedicated Compute offering. Now, the option to create colocated storage snapshots is available only in the Dedicated Compute offering, while the option to create remote storage snapshots is available in all accounts. See Backing Up and Restoring Storage Volumes Using Snapshots in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Web console allows you to select a site if your domain spans multiple sites The site selector in the web console allows you to select a site to create your instances and other resources.
Create Instance wizard supports HA policy “monitor” for instances When you create an instance from the web console by using the Create Instance wizard, you can now specify the HA policy monitor. See About High-Availability Policies in an Orchestration in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Entering Windows-specific attributes in the Create Instance wizard New fields have been added to the Create Instance wizard to allow you to enable RDP access to a Windows instance and specify the Administrator password. Earlier, this could only be done by entering the required parameters in JSON format in the Custom Attributes field.
Web console displays the API endpoint for each site in a domain When you select a site in the web console, you can view the API endpoint for each site.
Monitoring instance metrics and setting alert thresholds You can view metrics such as OCPU and memory usage for your instances in Oracle Cloud My Services. You can also configure thresholds to receive alerts for a specific metric for an instance.

Creating storage volume snapshots using the API You can use the POST /storage/snapshot/ method to create a storage volume snapshot using the API. You can also use the GET /storage/snapshot/ method to view storage volume snapshots and the DELETE /storage/snapshot/ method to delete existing snapshots. See REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS). Earlier you could create and manage storage volume snapshots only from the web console.
Viewing instance console log using the API You can use the GET /instanceconsole/name method to retrieve the console output of an instance using the API. Earlier, you could only view the instance console log from the web console. See REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Use cases in REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS) REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS) now includes a Use Cases section. This section provides the end-to-end flow required to complete tasks that involve multiple steps using various REST API calls. See Use Cases in REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
The VPN Endpoints page has moved to the Network tab in the web console You can now access the VPN Endpoints page from the Network tab on the web console. Earlier, the VPN Endpoints page was under the the actions menu button menu near the upper right corner.

Oracle Linux 6.7 image Besides Oracle Linux 6.4 and 6.6, you can now launch instances using an Oracle-provided Oracle Linux 6.7 image.
Create Instance wizard enhanced to simplify the selection of images and the default configuration of instances The Create Instance wizard has been enhanced. Private images and Oracle-provided images are now listed on separate tabs, making it easier to navigate to the image you want to use. You can also see details about each machine image. After selecting an image, you can accept all default configurations and proceed in a single click to creating an instance. All instances created using the web console are now managed by orchestrations. See the following in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS):
Updating storage volumes from the web console Earlier you could only increase the size of a storage volume by using the API. Now you can do this from the web console as well. See Increasing the Size of a Storage Volume in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Viewing the instance boot log The web console provides an option to view the boot log of an instance. See Viewing the Boot Log of an Instance in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Restarting an instance from the web console The web console provides an option to restart your instance. See Restarting an Instance in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
GRE security application Added a predefined security application for the GRE protocol.
Enhanced REST API reference documentation The REST API reference documentation for the service has been enhanced with a new format that enables you to navigate easily through the document. For every method, the reference now includes an example cURL command. See REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Oracle Compute Cloud Service — Generally Available (GA) Both metered and non-metered options of Oracle Compute Cloud Service – Compute Capacity are now generally available. However, the Dedicated Compute offering continues to follow the Controlled Availability process.
1 OCPU subscription You can no longer subscribe for 50 or 100 OCPU configurations. Instead, you can specify the required number of 1 OCPU subscriptions.
Bursting If you have a non-metered subscription, you can now provision resources up to twice the subscribed capacity. The additional usage will be charged per hour and billed monthly. For pricing information, go to https://cloud.oracle.com/compute and click the Pricing tab.
Oracle-provided Windows images Oracle provides images for Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition. See About Oracle-Provided Windows Images in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Oracle-provided Solaris images Oracle provides images for Oracle Solaris 11.3. See About Oracle-Provided Solaris Images in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Cloning storage volumes using snapshots You can clone storage volumes by taking a snapshot of a storage volume and using it to create new storage volumes. See Backing Up and Restoring Storage Volumes Using Snapshots in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Cloning instances using snapshots You can clone an instance by taking a snapshot and using the resulting image to launch new instances. See Cloning an Instance by Using Instance Snapshots in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Resizing storage volumes You can increase the size of a storage volume, even when it’s attached to an instance. See Update a Storage Volume in REST API for Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).
Private Images page moved to a new tab on the web console The Private Images page is now available from the Images tab on the web console. Earlier, it was under the the actions menu button menu near the upper right corner.
Instance IP addresses now shown on the Instances page You can now find the public and private IP addresses of each instance on the Instances page. Earlier, this information was displayed only on the instance details page of each instance.
Improved image upload tool The CLI tool for uploading custom images to Oracle Storage Cloud Service has been updated to support various operating systems. The tool has also been renamed to uploadcli. Changes in the web console for creating storage volumes The steps for creating storage volumes using the web console are simplified. See Creating a Storage Volume in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS) .

Note: While creating a storage volume, you can no longer specify the instance to which the volume must be attached. After creating a volume, you can attach it as described in Attaching a Storage Volume in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

opc-init documentation opc-init is a set of scripts included in Oracle-provided machine images, enabling you to specify configurations that must be performed automatically after an instance is created. See Automating Instance Initialization Using opc-init in Using Oracle Compute Cloud Service (IaaS).

Oracle Network Cloud Service - VPN for Dedicated Compute You can connect to instances through secure IPSec VPN tunnels using Oracle Network Cloud Service - VPN for Dedicated Compute.

Security IP list as the destination in a security rule created using the web console While creating a security rule using the web console, you can select a security IP list as the destination. Earlier, you could set only a security list as the destination.
SSH key management actions moved to the Network tab of the web console The SSH key management feature of the web console has been moved to the Network tab. Earlier, it was under the the actions menu button menu near the upper right corner.
Summary information displayed for each resource in the web console For each resource—instances, storage volumes, and so on—the web console includes a pane at the top displaying summary information about that resource.
Simplified navigation and improved performance in the web console In the Orchestrations tab, the objects are displayed in a tabular format by default. You can switch to the old list view.

The web console uses a framework that supports faster retrieval (and display) of updated content.
