This figure represents MTAs in Messaging Topology. In the figure, the internet facing MTA is found between the internal and external walls of the firewall. The internet facing MTA receives messages from external sites and relays the message across the firewall to the inbound MTA. The inbound MTA then sends the message to the correct area within the organization. The outbound MTA is located on the internal side of the firewall and accepts outgoing messages from clients. If needed, the outbound MTA will send the message across the firewall and to the internet.
