This figure represents a simplified view of a Messaging Server two-tiered architecture. In this figure, the mail clients interact with the access layer which includes the MMP and Webmail servers. The data layer includes the Message Stores and Directory Server. The inbound and outbound MTA (found in the access layer) sends external mail to the Internet and internal mail to the Message Stores in the data layer.
