This graphic shows an example of a grid. At the top are the client applications. They interface with the grid through an external network. There are six hosts that have data instances installed on them. The client applications connect to the data instances on these hosts through the external network.

There are two management instances installed on two separate hosts. The instance administrator connects directly to one of the management instances to execute commands that manage the grid.

There are three hosts installed with membership services. Each host acts as a membership server. One of these hosts has a repository installed on it.

All of the data instances, management instances, repositories and membership servers communicate over an internal network.
