Versions in Catalog Items

A catalog item version is a snapshot of a catalog item at a specific point in time, representing a particular configuration of the defined resource in Fleet Application Management.

Versioning of catalog items can benefit you in the following situations:

  • Consistency and standardization: Catalog item versions ensure that the same configuration of an infrastructure resource can be deployed consistently across different environments.
  • Version control and rollbacks: By creating versions, you can maintain a detailed history of changes. Each version is identifiable, allowing teams to track modifications, compare configurations, and, if necessary, rollback to a previous stable version, minimizing downtime in case of issues.
  • Collaborative development: Several team members can work on different versions of a catalog item simultaneously. This parallel development promotes collaboration, as teams can create, test, and deploy new configurations without affecting production environments until they're ready.
  • Testing and staging environments: The latest version can be used for testing and staging with a runbook, allowing teams to experiment and validate changes before deploying to production. This staged deployment process ensures that only tested and approved configurations reach the production stage.
