Unable to Open Desktop

When opening your desktop, you may encounter an error indicating that the desktop is unavailable. The issue may be due to network connectivity, desktop status, or a manual shutdown of the desktop.

Not quite the issue? See related: Installed Client Won't Connect to the Desktop.

Network issues

You may be unable to open the desktop due to network connectivity.

Remedy: Verify the network connection. Wait for any temporary network issues to resolve, and then reopen the desktop.

Desktop status

You can't open a desktop in Available - opening, Available - updating, or Available - failed status. For a description of the statuses, see Viewing Your Desktop Status.

Remedy: If the desktop is in Available - opening or Available - updating status, wait until the status changes to Available, and then reopen the desktop. If the desktop is in Available - failed status, contact the desktop administrator for help.

Desktop has been manually shut down

If the desktop was manually shut down through the operating system, the client can't connect to the desktop. See Error message after shutting down the desktop.

Remedy: Contact the desktop administrator to restart the desktop instance. Don't manually shut down the desktop from the operating system.

Windows updates

When a Windows update occurs on the client desktop, there might be a delay in the ability to access the desktop as it applies the update and reboots. This delay can vary depending on the size of the update and the compute shape of the desktop being updated. Also, you might need to restart applications after the reboot.

In Windows 11, The Windows Update page provides the estimated time to update and restart after the update is downloaded. Allow extra time for the client desktop to become accessible. If the delay persists, a desktop administrator can view status by monitoring the instance console for the desktop compute instance in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.
