New Features in Release 11.2.1.0.000

  • Release 11.2.1.0.000 adds support for Google Chrome web browser, Microsoft Edge web browser, and Windows Server 2016. Check the Oracle Enterprise Performance Management System Certification Matrix for all platform requirements.

  • In Management Ledger applications, when you select the Capture Essbase Debug Scripts option for a calculation job, the Oracle Essbase scripts used for the calculation are now captured in separate script files, which are then collected into a single ZIP file which is written to the import_export directory on the server. The individual script files are directly runnable in Essbase MAXL and can be used by Support to help diagnose calculation issues.

New Features in Release 11.2.0

The following enhancements are added to remove dependency on Enterprise Performance Management Architect (EPMA) which has been discontinued in the 11.2.0 release of Enterprise Performance Management. This means that only the Native and Master Cube application source types are supported in the 11.2.0 release. There is no more creating a Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management (HPCM) application in EPMA and deploying it to HPCM.

  • Like Management Ledger applications, now Standard and Detailed applications can be created directly in Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management from the Profitability Applications Console, and dimensions can be loaded directly from flat files into Profitability and Cost Management using the Update Dimensions action from the console.

    This means that the Metadata Validation and Validate and Enable actions, which are only applicable to Native applications, are now enabled for Standard and Details applications created using the Native (file-base) method.

  • A new action called Export Dimension is now available from the Actions menu in the Profitability Applications Console. Using this action you can export all the dimension members and their properties for one dimension at a time to a flat file which is compatible for re-import using Update Dimensions. This action is available for all three Profitability and Cost Management application types.

    See the Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management Administrator's Guide for more information about these changes.

Defects Fixed in Release 11.2.1.0.000

  • 30830579 -- From the Profitability Applications console, creating a new Detailed Profitability application using the Native method was blocked by an error in the New Application dialog; that error is fixed in this release.

  • 30793278 -- For Management Ledger applications, the Rule Sets and Rules tab in Model Validation was initially only showing the first 6 errors; the remaining error lines were displayed only after clicking the Query by Example icon. In this release, all of the errors are shown directly after running the validation, as expected.

  • 30776134 -- The Export Dimension feature in the Profitability Applications console was creating a comma-separated-values (csv) dimension text file with correctly-formatted contents, but without the expected “.csv” file suffix. In this release, the Export Dimensions feature correctly creates the dimension text file with the .csv file suffix.

  • 30774672 -- For Standard Profitability applications, in the Manage Queries screen, changes to the Suppress #Missing and the Dimension Aliases check boxes were not correctly saved; that problem is fixed in this release.

  • 30665293, 30670795 -- For Standard Profitability applications, the Job Status => Search Task screen was not accessible; it is restored in this release.

Defects Fixed in Release 11.2.0

Release 11.2.0 includes all defects fixed from PSEs or PSUs released after Release 11.1.2.4 up to and including PSU 11.1.2.4.130. See those readmes for the list of defects fixed in each PSE or PSU. The PSU 11.1.2.4.130 readme contains a cumulative list of all defects fixed in each 11.1.2.4 PSE or PSU.

In addition to the defects fixed from Release 11.1.2.4 up to 11.1.2.4.130, this release includes these defects fixed:

28819740, 30217268 -- In the 11.1.2.4 release, for Management Ledger applications, when running calculations with a high degree of concurrency (parallel rulesets and/or running multiple POVs concurrently), calculations could intermittently fail due to concurrency issues for writing execution statistics to the database. That problem is resolved in this release.

Known Issues in Release 11.2.1.0.000

  • 30856596 -- It can take several seconds to open a Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management application or to open the Profitability Applications console, especially after restarting the Profitability service. With the Chrome and Edge Chromium browsers which are now supported in this release, this can result in a pop-up message that the pages aren’t responding, with an option to wait or to exit the pages. This message can be ignored – the pages will eventually open as expected.

  • 30774386 -- The Job Library screen within an open application and the Job Library screen in the Profitability Applications console both allow you to export the job history to an Excel spreadsheet file. The exported file is created in html format. If you give the file an “.html” suffix when you save it, you will be able to open it in any browser, in MS Word, MS Excel, or in other programs that handle html files.

  • 30514802 -- The Internet Explorer browser is not supported for Management Ledger applications in Release 11.2.1.0.000.

    If you use Internet Explorer to define rule sets and rules in a Management Ledger application, you will constantly get unnecessary pop-up error messages while navigating down the dimension hierarchy to select dimension members within the various contexts of defining a rule set or a rule.

    The workaround is to use the Chrome, Edge Chromium, or Firefox browser.

  • 30445644 -- For Detailed Profitability applications using SQL Server, the Total Output and Unassigned Cost values in the Stage Summary section of Stage Balancing do not display the correct values.

  • 30440499, 30462134 -- In APS connection mode on distributed systems, where Oracle Essbase is installed on a different server from Profitability and Cost Management, Essbase connection errors can occur during cube deployment, calculation, rule balancing, and so on if APS is not correctly installed and configured.

    The main requirement here is that for distributed systems, Analytic Provider Services must also be installed on the Profitability and Cost Management server.

  • 30424305 -- After deleting dimension members, the Archive Data and Reload After Deploy option for redeploying the cube to Essbase and preserving the data is not guaranteed to always work, depending on how Essbase is able to deal with those deleted members.

    As a workaround, you may have to export all data and remove the data for the deleted members and then reload the data in a separate step after deploying the cube without the Archive Data and Reload After Deploy option selected.

  • 30385318 -- When a Standard or Detailed application that was created using the Master Cube method is duplicated, the Profitability and Cost Management service may need to be restarted before the cube in the duplicated application can be successfully deployed to Essbase.

  • 25468999 -- When invoking Oracle Smart View for Office from Manage Queries, you may encounter errors such as: "connection refused" and "Web launch operation cancelled".

    Oracle recommends the Full SSL Deployment of EPM System as described by the Oracle Enterprise Performance Management System Security Configuration Guide to support invoking Managed Queries from Management Ledger with SSL. If you terminate SSL at the OHS server, then additional configuration may be required within the OHS configuration files.

  • 24927444 -- For Standard and Management Ledger applications, selecting Suppress #Missing in a Query definition returns the error "Cannot perform cube view operation.null". If you deselect this option, the query runs and you can see data along with missing data rows.

  • 23512869 -- For Management Ledger Applications, LCM Export includes a Metadata folder which contains two artifacts: ApplicationData and Dimensions. Only the Dimensions artifact is supported for this release. For correct operation of LCM Export, you must deselect ApplicationData.

    To import, you must pre-create the application in the Profitability Applications console, then you can import into it. When importing, you can select the Dimensions artifact; do not select the ApplicationData artifact.

  • 20550180 -- In an Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) compact deployment installation, persistence messages from Profitability and Cost Management and from other EPM products that use EclipseLink technology are being redirected to the hpcm.log file.

    See "Creating a Separate Log File for Persistence Messages" for instructions in editing the logging.xml file to redirect these messages to a separate log file.

  • 20421528 -- For Management Ledger applications using the "APS" connection type, the Cells Updated statistic is missing from the Execution Statistics system report. Oracle strongly recommends you use the "Embedded" Essbase connection type.

Known Issues in Release 11.2.0

  • 30445644 -- For Detailed Profitability applications using SQL Server, the Unassigned Cost value in Stage Balancing is not always displaying the correct value, and does not display the correct value for the BksDP30 sample application.

  • 30440499, 30462134 -- In APS connection mode on distributed systems, where Oracle Essbase is installed on a different server from Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management, Essbase connection errors can occur during cube deployment, calculation, rule balancing, etc. if APS is not correctly installed and configured.

  • 29999742 -- In this release, UDA filters on Detailed Profitability calculation rules may not filter correctly, resulting in wrongly allocated amounts. Oracle recommends using Attributes and Attribute filters as a workaround.

    As a workaround, you should use Attributes instead of UDAs so you can use Attribute filters in destination assignment rules.

  • 24927444 -- For Standard and Management Ledger applications, selecting Suppress Missing in a Query definition returns the error "Cannot perform cube view operation.null".

For correct operation of LCM Export you must deselect ApplicationData.

    To import, you must pre-create the application in the Profitability Applications console, then you can import into it. When importing, you can select the Dimensions artifact; do not select the ApplicationData artifact.

  • 22497510 -- For Management Ledger applications, in certain cases where the Essbase allocation must allocate to level 0 members of a specified parent member it is unable to do so. Instead of allocating to the set of level 0 children, it only allocates to the first child in the hierarchy. .

    To work around this issue, in the rule you must select all the level 0 members individually

  • 20550180 -- In an Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) compact deployment installation, persistence messages from Profitability and Cost Management and from other EPM products that use EclipseLink technology are being redirected to the hpcm.log file. See Creating a Separate Log File for Persistence Messages for instructions in editing the logging.xml file to redirect these messages to a separate log file.

  • 20421528 -- For Management Ledger applications using the "APS" Essbase connection type, the Cells Updated statistic is missing from the Execution Statistics system report. Oracle strongly recommends you use the "Embedded" Essbase connection type.

Dimension Member Naming

It is advised to not use any of the system dimension member names for member names in any of the other dimensions or hierarchies. For example, DirectAllocation or GenealogyAllocation are system members in the AllocationType dimension and these names should not be used in any other dimensions in the model. This is good practice for all Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management application types.

Oracle strongly recommends avoiding the use of special characters within dimension member names. The '_' (underscore) and ' ' (space) characters are supported in member names. Other special characters may not work in all cases and their use is discouraged.

Protected Management Ledger System Dimensions

The Management Ledger Rule and Balance dimensions are system dimensions that are seeded and should not be edited in any way, even if some part of the system allows it (for example, Update Dimensions in the Profitability Applications console). These dimensions are reserved for system use.

Management Ledger Business Dimensions - Shared Members

In Management Ledger business dimensions, do not make shared members that reference non-level-0 base members. Doing so causes the copy POV and the calculation operations to fail because it creates situations where Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management needs to write to non-level-0 members, which is not supported in Oracle Essbase for ASO cubes.

Controlling the Allocation Rounding Precision for Management Ledger Calculations

There is a hidden installation preference you can insert in the database to change the number of decimal places that allocation results are rounded to during Management Ledger calculation (the current default is 7 decimal places).

In the following SQL statements, replace <value> with an integer from -6 to 7 (keep the single quotes).

A value of -6 rounds to the nearest million; a value of 0 rounds to the nearest whole number; a value of 7 rounds to 7 decimal places.

During the allocation, the remainders from the rounding operations are added to the destination intersection with the largest allocated value.

For Oracle databases, execute this SQL statement in SQL Developer while connected as the Profitability product schema owner and then commit the change:

INSERT INTO HPM_INSTALLATION_PREFERENCE

(ID,NAME,VALUE,HPM_INSTALLATION_ID,CREATED_TIMESTAMP,CREATED_USERID,MODIFIED_TIMESTAMP,MODIFIED_USERID,DISPLAY_ORDER)
VALUES (40,'MLCalculationPrecision','<value>',1,SYSDATE,'INIT',SYSDATE,'INIT',40);

For Microsoft SQL Server databases, execute this SQL block in SQL Server Management Studio while connected to the Profitability product database:

BEGIN
     SET IDENTITY_INSERT HPM_INSTALLATION_PREFERENCE ON
     INSERT INTO HPM_INSTALLATION_PREFERENCE
     (ID,NAME,VALUE,HPM_INSTALLATION_ID,CREATED_TIMESTAMP,
     CREATED_USERID,MODIFIED_TIMESTAMP,MODIFIED_USERID,DISPLAY_ORDER)VALUES
     (40,'MLCalculationPrecision','<value>',1,getDate(),'INIT',getDate(),'INIT',40)
     SET IDENTITY_INSERT HPM_INSTALLATION_PREFERENCE OFF
END
go

Creating a Separate Log File for Persistence Messages

For Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) instances installed as compact deployment, messages from other installed EPM products are also directed to the hpcm.log file. The logging.xml file can be edited to redirect these messages to a new log file called "persistence.log". You may find advantage in splitting the persistence messages to a separate log file even for standard deployments.

  • For compact deployments, the logging.xml file is located at <MIDDLEWARE_HOME>\user_projects\domains\EPMSystem\config\fmwconfig\servers\EPMServer0.

  • For standard deployments, the logging.xml file is located at <MIDDLEWARE_HOME>\user_projects\domains\EPMSystem\config\fmwconfig\servers\Profitability0.

To create a separate log file:

  1. Edit the logging.xml file and define a new log handler within the <log_handlers> section. Here is a suggested definition for a new handler:

    <log_handler name="persist-handler" class="oracle.core.ojdl.logging.ODLHandlerFactory">
    <property name="path"
    value="${domain.home}/servers/${weblogic.Name}/logs/persistence.log"/>
    <property name="maxFileSize" value="20000000"/>
    <property name="maxLogSize" value="100000000"/>
    <property name="useSourceClassAndMethod" value="true"/>
    </log_handler>
  2. Alter the logger for org.eclipse.persistence in the <loggers> section to point to the new handler, as in the example below, where the handler name has been changed from "epmpcm-handler" to "persist-handler".

    <logger name="org.eclipse.persistence" level="NOTIFICATION:16" useParentHandlers="false">
    <handler name="persist-handler"/>
    </logger>

ODBC Driver Recommendation

Detailed Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management applications require a user-configured ODBC data source called PROFITABILITY_DS in order to transfer data into the three Oracle Essbase reporting cubes that are now available for Detailed Profitability and Cost Management applications. See the section titled "Creating the ODBC Data Source to Enable Data Transfers" in the Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management Administrator's Guide for more information.

Oracle recommends using the DataWire ODBC driver from the Oracle Data Access client for configuring this data source.

Solving Issues with Profitability and Cost Management Essbase Connections

Issues with Analytic Provider Services (APS) Connection Type

Analytic Provider Services Installation Requirement

In distributed systems, (where Oracle Essbase is installed on a different server than Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management, Oracle Hyperion Provider Services must also be installed and configured on the Profitability and Cost Management server.

Increasing the Default WebLogic Timeout Settings to Support APS Essbase Connection Type

Oracle recommends using the "Embedded" Essbase Connection Type when possible. If you must use APS mode, you may need to increase the default WebLogic timeout settings. Follow the steps provided in "Specifying Session Timeout" section of the Oracle Hyperion Provider Services Administration Guide.

Changing the Connection Type to Embedded Mode

If you receive a network error when using the APS Connection Type, switch the Connection Type to embedded mode, and redeploy the cube.

To set the Connection Type to embedded mode:

  1. In Profitability and Cost Management, from Task Areas, select Manage Model, and then Model Summary.

  2. On the Model Summary screen, select the Model Level Preference tab.

  3. Under Essbase Connection Information, select Embedded from the Connection Type drop-down list.

  4. Click the Save icon.

Registry Optimizations

Setting the JVMOption for Embedded Connection Type

If you are experiencing difficulties using the "embedded" Connection Type mode in Oracle Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management to connect to Oracle Essbase (especially in distributed configurations), you must set the environment variable ESS_ES_HOME as a JVMOption in order for Profitability and Cost Management to point to any local folder which contains two empty folders called bin and data.

  • If APS is installed on the system, set ESS_ES_HOME to the same value as the APS_HOME environment variable. (APS_HOME should have the required folder structure.)

  • If APS is not installed, set ESS_ES_HOME to any folder which contains empty bin and data folders

Note:

No changes are required if you are using the "APS" Connection Type mode.

To set the JVMOption for the Embedded Connection Type:

  1. Stop the Profitability and Cost Management server.

  2. Edit the Windows registry for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hyperion Solutions\Profitability0\HyS9HyS9PftWeb.

  3. Add a JVMOptionX (where X is the next integer, based on the existing number of JVMOptions). For example, if the current JVMOptionCount is set to decimal 17, then add JVMOption18.

  4. Set the string value for the new JVMOptionX to -DESS_ES_HOME=<folder-name>, where folder name is the name of the folder that contains the empty bin and data folders.

  5. Increment the JVMOptionCount to the next integer. For example, if JVMOption18 is added, then set JVMOptionCount to decimal 18.

  6. Start the Profitability and Cost Management server.

Setting for a High Rate of Network Connections for Windows

To improve the ability of the Windows operating system to deal with a high rate of network connections:

  1. From the Windows Registry, navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TCPIP\Parameters

  2. Add or modify the following registry entries:

    • TcpTimedWaitDelay - Set this to a low value (for example, 30) for the sockets to be released quickly. This DWORD value ranges between 30-300.

    • MaxUserPort - Set this to a high value (for example, 33000) to increase the total number of sockets that can be connected to the port. This is a DWORD value.

    CAUTION: Before modifying these parameters, refer to the Microsoft Windows operating system documentation for more details.

  3. Reboot the system for the changes to take effect.
