Upgrading OpenSearch from 2.3.0 or 2.11.0 to 3.2.0 Interactively

Perform a full upgrade of OpenSearch to the current release.

The upgrade from Elasticsearch to OpenSearch 3.2 is no longer supported. Before performing a full upgrade to OpenSearch 3.2, check whether any indices were originally created in Elasticsearch 7.10.x or any other Elasticsearch version by using this command:
GET http://<host>:<port>/_all/_settings/index.version.created?flat_settings=true

If an index shows an Elasticsearch-created version, such as 7.10.x (for example, 7100099), and it has not been re-deployed and re-indexed in OpenSearch 2.3 or 2.11, then it must be re-deployed and re-indexed in OpenSearch 2.3 or 2.11 first before upgrading to OpenSearch 3.2.

This applies only to the following scenarios:

  • You are upgrading from Elasticsearch to OpenSearch 3.2.
  • You previously upgraded from Elasticsearch to OpenSearch 2.3 or 2.11 but have not yet re-deployed their indices.

If the indices have already been re-deployed on OpenSearch 2.3 or 2.11, no additional re-indexing is required before the full upgrade to OpenSearch 3.2. Alternatively, a fresh installation of OpenSearch 3.2 can be performed, followed by deployment and indexing from scratch.
