About Database Backups

Database backups protect your data by creating recoverable copies of your databases. Oracle Base Database Cloud@Customer supports automatic backups that run on a schedule and on-demand backups that you create manually.

You can store backups in one of the supported backup storage locations. Depending on the storage location that you use, you might also need to create a backup destination.

Oracle Managed Backup

Database backups are managed entirely by Oracle Base Database Cloud@Customer based on a one-time configuration.

After you configure managed backups, you do not need to perform maintenance tasks such as scheduling backups or deleting backups. Oracle manages the backups through defined workflows.

Supported Backup Storage Locations

Oracle Base Database Cloud@Customer supports the following backup storage locations.

Recovery Appliance

Recovery Appliance stores database backups in Oracle Zero Data Loss Recovery Appliance.

To store backups in a Recovery Appliance, create a backup destination that defines the connection information for the Recovery Appliance.

Network File System (NFS)

A Network File System (NFS) stores database backups on a shared file system.

To store backups on an NFS server, create a backup destination that defines the connection information for the NFS location.

Backup Destinations

A backup destination is an Oracle resource that stores the connection information required to access a backup storage location.

Backup destinations are required for the following backup storage locations:

• Recovery Appliance
• Network File System (NFS)

Automatic and On-Demand Backups

Oracle Base Database Cloud@Customer supports automatic and on-demand backups.

Automatic Backups

Automatic backups run according to a configured schedule. You can configure the following settings:

• Backup window
• Retention period
• Backup storage location

On-Demand Backups

On-demand backups are created manually whenever required.

Backup Retention

Automatic backups are retained according to the configured retention period.

The retention period determines how long automatic backups are retained before they are automatically deleted.
