Perform a Database Switchover

This topic describes how to perform a switchover on a database in a Data Guard group.

Before you begin, review the following:

• You can initiate a switchover operation on a standby database that is a member of a Data Guard group.

• A switchover reverses the roles of the primary and standby databases. Each database continues to participate in the Oracle Data Guard configuration in its new role without data loss.

• A switchover is typically performed before planned maintenance on the primary database. For example, you can switch the primary database to the standby role, perform maintenance on the former primary database, and then switch the databases back to restore their original roles.

Procedure

Perform the following steps in the Console.

1. On the Data Infrastructures list page, select the Data Infrastructure that you want to work with. If you need help finding the list page or the Data Infrastructure, see List Data Infrastructures.

2. On the Data Infrastructure details page, select the VM Cluster tab to view the list of all VM Clusters.
3. On the VM Clusters tab, select the VM Cluster that you want to work with.

4. On the VM Cluster details page, select the Databases tab to view the list of all databases.

5. On the Databases tab, select the Database that you want to work with.

6. On the Database details page, select Data Guard Group.

7. For the standby database you want to switchover, select the Actions icon (three dots), and select Switchover.

After the switchover completes successfully, the standby database assumes the primary role, and the former primary database assumes the standby role.
