Re-imagine
Overview
So far we have focused on modernizations patterns where the business function remains more or less the same, but maybe with some incremental enhancements or optimizations. However, there are situation where the current application has become more of a business inhibitor than a business enabler. Sometimes, the business wants to do something genuinely different - perhaps a substantially new business approach to a given area - or even an entirely mew business model or venture.
For these cases, we would describe them as a reimagine of any existing applications and will likely need a much more fundamental shift in technology and approach than would be typical is a rebuild approach. In recent times this option is much more common than in the previous decades. The switch to mobile devices, increasing digitization and the use of technologies such as internet-of-things and artificial intelligence can fundamentally change business models and processes.

Strategic Value |
The benefits of this approach can be quite profound - it may launch your organization to become a global leader, or fundamentally change what your organization does. However, get it wrong and equally, that could be end of your business. However, it is rarely the technical choice that is the differentiator between business success and failure - it is the business model itself which ultimately drives success or failure. That said, bad technology choices can become significant barriers to success.
Challenges
Building brand new technology platforms for new business ventures is somewhat beyond the scope of this guidance, however, there are a few key points which are worth mentioning even at this high level:
- in a dynamically changing market, enabling business agility is a primary concern
- in most new digital markets, security can never be ignored when dealing with private data
- fast prototyping of solutions followed by business-led pilots are the most typical model
- small cross-disciplinary teams of business and IT are essential for success
Use Cases
Rather than technology use cases, here are some famous examples of where the combination of a new business model with technology change have enabled a true business transformation :
