Edit Autonomous Container Database Backup Settings

If automatic backups were disabled while provisioning an Autonomous Container Database (ACD), you can enable them later from the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) console.

Note:

Once enabled, automatic backups can not be disabled for an ACD.

Required IAM Policies

use autonomous-container-databases

Procedure

  1. Go to the Details page of the Autonomous Container Database whose backup settings you want to change.

For instructions, see View Details of an Autonomous Container Database.

  2. Under Actions, click Edit backup settings on Oracle Public Cloud and Backup settings on Exadata Cloud@Customer.
  3. If automatic backups are disabled for this ACD, enable them by selecting the Enable automatic backups check-box, and choose appropriate values for the following settings:

    Setting Description Notes

    Backup destination type

Select a backup destination type and then specify options based on the selected type.

See Backup destination for more details on the supported backup destination types.

APPLIES TO: Applicable Exadata Cloud@Customer only

At any given point in time, there can only be a maximum of two backup destinations associated with an ACD. See Change Backup Destinations for the allowed switches from one backup destination type to another.

Deletion option after Autonomous Container database termination

Specify the duration to retain backups after ACD is terminated.

APPLIES TO: Applicable Oracle Public Cloud

    APPLIES TO: Applicable Exadata Cloud@Customer

When you enable automatic backups, choose from the following options to determine how long backups are retained after terminating the ACD:
    • Retain backups as per the backup retention period
    • Retain backups for 72hours, then delete

The setting you choose for retaining backups after ACD's termination does not apply to long-term backups.

    Backup retention period (in days)

Specify a Backup retention period value to meet your needs. You can choose any value between 7 to 95 days.

On Oracle Public Cloud and Multicloud deployments, the backup retention policy value defaults to 15 days.

On Exadata Cloud@Customer deployments, the backup retention policy value is as follows:
    • If the backup destination type is local, then the backup retention period is 7 days.
    • If the backup destination type is NFS or Object Storage, then the backup retention period is between 7 days and 95 days as set by the customer.
    • If the backup destination type is a Recovery Appliance, then the backup retention period is controlled by a policy set by the customer on the appliance.

All the backups are automatically deleted after the backup retention period.

    Enable or Disable retention lock

If you choose to retain backups for the duration of the backup retention period, you can also enable retention lock.

APPLIES TO: Applicable Oracle Public Cloud

    APPLIES TO: Applicable Exadata Cloud@Customer

    Enabling retention lock:
    • Provides a 14-day grace period to disable the retention lock, after which the retention lock setting becomes permanent.
    • Retains all the automatic database backups until the ACD backup retention period.
    • Retains the long-term backups until their retention period (which is set while creating a long-term backup). Allows you only to increase the retention period that is already set, guaranteeing the backups remain for the retention period.
    • Disallows you from deleting any backup before its retention period expires.
    • Deletes all the automatic backups upon reaching their retention period expiry. However, if you have configured NFS for storing the automatic backups and the underlying ACD is terminated, then you have to manually delete the backups.
    • Deletes the long-term backups after they expire. If you have configured NFS for storing the long-term backups and the ACD is terminated, then you have to manually delete the backups after they expire.

If you have chosen to retain backups only for 72 hours after the ACD is terminated, then the retention lock option is unavailable.

    Enable cross-region backup copy

Select Enable cross-region backup copy and specify a region for the backup copies.

APPLIES TO: Applicable Oracle Public Cloud only

After creating a remote backup, you can see the Remote backup region from the ACD Details page. You can click this link to open the list of remote backups.

When you change the region for cross-region backups, a new backup will be taken. The backup from the previously selected region will be retained for 7 days and deleted after.

Whenever you disable cross-region backups on an ACD, the existing backup in the remote region will be retained for 7 days & deleted after.

  4. When finished, save your changes.
