Creating Named Actions for Reuse

Create action links so users can navigate to related BI content (for example, a graph of company revenue for selected brands) or some other useful web page right from the report or dashboard. Named actions are saved to the catalog and can be reused in multiple analyses and dashboards.

Users can click an analysis that is embedded within column headings and column values. Users can also click links in views such as graphs, and on grand totals within tables and pivot tables.

A named action is saved in the catalog and can be reused (unlike an inline action, which you don’t save). For example, you might create a named action called Navigate to Company Home which links to your company's home page. Because you saved it in the catalog, you can add it to pages in multiple dashboards.

  1. From the Home page, display the Navigator, and click either Navigate to BI Content or Navigate to a Web Page.
If the Navigator is not displayed, click the Navigator icon (Description of navigator-hamburger-icon.gif follows
Description of the illustration navigator-hamburger-icon.gif) in the Home page.
  2. To navigate to BI Content, select an analysis or dashboard, either in the My Folders or the shared folder area, and click OK.
  3. To navigate to a web page, specify the URL of the page. Optionally, embed a parameter value within the URL:
    1. Click Define Parameters.
    2. Click Add Parameter.
    3. Specify the column values for the parameter. For example, you can embed a parameter value anywhere within the URL for a Navigate to a Web Page action. Enter the @{Name} value, where "Name" is the value specified in the Name column. Also, parameters can be fixed, hidden, or optional.
      Property Description
Fixed Users can see the value but can’t set the value.
Hidden Users can’t see or set the value (note this doesn’t mean that the parameter is secure).
Optional A value isn’t required for the action to run.
    4. Click Add Parameter to embed the parameter in the URL. You can embed any number of parameters.
  4. Optionally, click Options to customize the information that is displayed when the action runs.
    Customization Description

    Action Help Text

Enter the text of the dialog that is displayed to supply action parameter values. To embed a URL link within the text, use the token @{URL}. The URL link is substituted for the token.

    Link URL

Specify to display a URL link below or within the text of the dialog to supply action parameter values. For example, you can display a link that navigates to a URL that provides more information about an action being run.

If you embed the @{URL} token in the text, then the URL (or URL label, if provided) is displayed within the text. If you don’t embed the token in the text, then the URL (or URL label, if provided) is displayed beneath the text.

  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Save Action.
  7. Specify the information for saving the action.
  8. Verify that the action runs properly:
    1. Navigate to the named action in the catalog.
    2. Click Execute.
    3. Respond to any request for more information or any confirmation prompt that is displayed.
