What’s New for Big Data Service

As soon as new and changed features become available, Big Data Service instances are upgraded in the data centers where Oracle Cloud services are hosted. You don’t need to request an upgrade to be able to use the new features—they come to you automatically. Here’s an overview of new features and enhancements added recently to improve your Big Data Service experience.

Feature Description
Restart a cluster node

You can now use the Cloud Console to restart a running cluster node. See Restart a Cluster Node in Using Oracle Big Data Service.

Change shape of cluster nodes You can now use the Cloud Console to change the shapes of nodes in a running cluster. See Change the Shapes of Cluster Nodes in Using Oracle Big Data Service.

Access HDFS and Hive in a notebook

The Oracle Big Data Service documentation now describes how to access HDFS and Hive in a notebook by granting users access to folders and files.

Use notebooks in Oracle Big Data Service

Oracle Big Data Service now includes a browser-based notebook application that enables you to use notebooks to explore and visualize data. You can create notebooks, and also import and export notebooks, including Jupyter notebooks.

Upgrade Oracle Cloud SQL to use the Oracle Query Server 4.1

The Oracle Cloud SQL feature available for use with Oracle Big Data Service has been upgraded to use the Oracle Query Server 4.1. Enhancements for Query Server 4.1 include:
  • Object Store Reader Enhancements
    The following ORACLE_BIGDATA driver updates are available:
    • Support for Apache ORC file format. See Create External Tables in Using Oracle Big Data Service.
    • Support for complex data types with ORC, Parquet and Avro. This capability was supported in Hadoop, and is now supported with ORACLE_BIGDATA. See Create External Tables in Using Oracle Big Data Service.
    • Enhancements to Text Driver. New text-based access parameters available. See About the Access Drivers for Cloud SQL. in Using Oracle Big Data Service.
  • Support for Microsoft's Azure Blob Object Storage

    The ORACLE_BIGDATA driver has been extended to support the creation of external tables that map to data stored in Azure Blob storage. See Create External Tables in Using Oracle Big Data Service.
