Adding Application Cubes

Application cubes store metadata and data. The Cubes tab displays the Name and Type of cubes that are associated with the application. By default, there are two cubes in multi-currency applications:

  • Consol - Consolidated

  • Rates -Foreign Exchange Rates

If you are a Service Administrator, you can enable additional block storage cubes as needed. You can select any one or more predefined cubes (Consol Cube 2, Consol Cube 3, Consol Cube 4, and Consol Cube 5). Enabling additional cubes allows you to break up your data into unique slices to optimize performance.

This feature is only available for Dense/Sparse Optimized (DSO) applications.

Caution:

This feature is only available on a restricted basis. Adding additional cubes results in more maintenance required for the application, so it is recommended only for specific use cases. To enable this feature, you must submit a technical Service Request (SR).

Use Cases - Recommended

  • Performance Improvement

    • Segmentation of data to minimize cube size

    • Constant Currency analysis

    • Other reporting standards (local GAAP, IFRS, etc.)

    • Additional detail, for example, footnotes

  • Functional improvement - additional Custom dimensions (via stacking)

  • Main drivers

    • The data slices should be independent

    • Resources are shared

    • Ideally, data movement should be minimal

Use Cases - Not Recommended

  • Historical data

    • Application size will still be the same

    • There is no consolidation performance improvement in this configuration

  • Archiving data

    • Same considerations as historical data

    • Logistical complication of resetting opening balances constantly

When you enable additional cubes, warning messages are displayed. The warnings depend on which other features are already enabled in your application, such as Enhanced Organization by Period and Ownership Management. Enabling Additional Cubes and other features separately ensures that the metadata changes for these features are implemented correctly.

After you enable a cube, a new cube is created with the selected cube name. Since additional cubes are only available for DSO applications, the new cube will be configured with Period and Movement as Dense. All cubes will have the same number of dimensions and application settings. These artifacts will be created/enabled in the new cube:

  • Dimensions and seeded members will be enabled.

  • Seeded Forms and Rules will be created for the cube.

  • You need to recreate or copy any user-created Forms and On-Demand rules in the new cube.

  • From the Dimension Editor, you can enable all the non-seeded members for new cubes.

  • Scenarios and Years will be enabled by default for all cubes.

After you add a new cube, you can select it from the Cube dropdown, for example, in the consolidation process, Configurable Consolidation rules, Configurable Calculation (Insertion) rules, On-Demand rules, Translation rules, Reporting Currency translatiaon, Consolidation reports, Intercompany Matching reports, Journals and Journal reports.

To enable additional cubes:

  1. On the Home page, click Application, and select Configuration.

  2. From the Configure screen, click Enable Features,

  3. From Enable Additional Cubes, select any one or more predefined cubes (Consol Cube 2, Consol Cube 3, Consol Cube 4, and Consol Cube 5) and then click Enable.

A new cube is created with the selected cube name.
