How are arrears handled for support orders?

The payroll process doesn't automatically take arrears for involuntary deductions.

Only courts and other issuing authorities can determine when a support order is in arrears. These support orders consist of deductions of the Child Support, Alimony, and Spousal Support types.

In these cases, based on the court's instructions, you need to either:

  • Define another involuntary order for the arrears amount.

  • Modify the existing order to enter the arrears amount in the total withholding amount or total withholding percentage.

Use the proration overrides to track the breakdown of the total withholding amount as it relates to other values for the deduction. This can include the current deduction amount, medical support amounts, and arrears amounts. For further info, see Proration Rules for Support Orders for the US in the Help Center.
