Business Unit and Position in When and Why

Positions are specific to a business unit. You must select the business unit and the associated position in the When and why step of Redwood employment processes instead of the Assignment step.

The business unit and position selection is moved from the Assignment step to the When and why step for these reasons.

  • Streamline execution of business rules based on business unit and position instead of doing this in the Assignment step.
  • Simplify the transaction when workers are managed using positions, as you have the ability to manage the position upfront in When and Why step.
  • The business unit attribute will always have a value whether it's available, by default (as in Add Person processes) or hidden (as in update employment processes).

The business unit and associated position selection is available in these processes.

  • Add Assignment
  • Add Contingent Worker
  • Add Nonworker
  • Add Pending Worker
  • Change Assignment
  • Change Location
  • Create Work Relationship
  • Edit Pending Worker
  • Employment Details
  • Hire an Employee
  • Promote
  • Promote and Change Position
  • Transfer

Some key points to note about the business unit and position selection are as follows:

  • The business unit and position attributes are read-only in the Assignment step. You can update these values only in the When and why step.
  • If you change the business unit on the When and why step the second time, then you need to visit the Assignment step as there may be attributes dependent on the business unit that become invalid on the change.
  • You need to select the position again if you change the business unit.
