How do I navigate the Visual Builder Studio documentation?

Title and music.

When you’re using Visual Builder Studio’s Express Mode to modify your application, you’ll frequently hear the phrase, “Check the documentation.” For example, when you’re trying to validate a field or set its default value, you’ll be told to, “Check the documentation for supported fields.” The obvious question is, “How do I do that?” This video teaches you how.

There are two documents available to help you with your configuration. Extending Oracle Cloud Applications in Visual Builder Studio Express mode contains general configuration information; for example, instructions on working with business rules or publishing your changes. You can access this document from within Visual Builder Studio. However, when you need pillar-specific information, such as which pages or fields support which configurations, you should consult your pillar-specific documentation. For HCM and SCM, it’s Extending Redwood Applications for HCM and SCM Using Visual Builder Studio. There’s a link in the general document, or you can find it on docs.oracle.com.

Let’s explore how to navigate to this documentation.

Within VB Studio, you can mouse over an information icon to see a brief help summary. If you need more information, click Tell me more to access the documentation.

Sign in as Curtis.Feitty.

In the Apps section, click My Client Groups.

In the Quick Actions list, click Show More.

In the Employment section, click Change Assignment.

In the Search field, enter Justin Wilborn.

Click Search.

In the Search Results section, click Justin Wilborn.

Click the Settings and Actions menu.

Select Edit Page in Visual Builder Studio.

Click Configure Fields and Regions.

Next to the Expose working house and FT/PT status rule, hover over the Information icon.

Click Tell me more.

You are navigated to the appropriate section in Extending Oracle Cloud Applications in Visual Builder Studio Express Mode. For example, since you clicked for help on business rules, you are navigated to that section. You can expand the sections to learn more about the topic you’re interested in; for example, suppose you’re interested in setting a default value for a field.

In the Control Your Display with Business Rules chapter, expand the Work with Business Rules section.

Expand the Override Field Properties in a Form section.

Click the Set Default Value for a Field topic.

Notice that there are sections on how to set conditions for your rule, or on how to set a default value. Let’s look at the instructions for setting a default value. The documentation provides detailed instructions on how to set a default value, including a concrete example. However, if we scroll down, the instructions don’t include a list of which fields are supported.

Scroll down to review the instructions.

For that, you want the pillar-specific documentation. One way to access the pillar-specific documentation is from within the general document. Navigate to the introduction.

Scroll up to the top of the page.

Click the What Can You Do with Visual Builder Studio in Express Mode? chapter.

The link to the platform-specific documentation is in the note.

In the Note, click the Overview of Redwood Application Extension link.

Notice that you’re now in the pillar-specific Extending Redwood Applications for HCM and SCM Using Visual Builder Studio. The overview includes a link back to the general documentation, so it’s easy to go back and forth between them. Finally, let’s see how to get here from docs.oracle.com.

From a web browser, in the URL enter doc.oracle.com.

Click the Enter key.

From docs.oracle.com, select your Fusion applications suite.

Click Human Resources.

Since you know the name of the document, use the All Books link.

Click All Books.

The Configuration and Extension section is near the bottom of the page.

Scroll down.

Drill down into the book.

Click Extending Redwood Applications for HCM and SCM Using Visual Builder Studio.

You’re once again in the pillar-specific document. Now that you know how to get here, it’s time to learn how to check your requirements. Similar to the general document, Extending Redwood Applications for HCM and SCM Using Visual Builder Studio has a chapter on implementing defaulting and validation rules. However, this one is specific to HCM and SCM Redwood pages.

In the table of contents, scroll down.

Click the Guidelines for Implementing Defaulting and Validation Rules topic.

Suppose we were trying to default the Full Time or Part Time value on the Change Assignment page based on an employee’s working hours. Since assignment changes are part of the Employment module, select Employment to review the supported fields.

Click the Employment topic.

Notice that defaulting the Full Time or Part Time field based on working hours is explicitly listed as supported. If your field isn’t listed here, you can scroll down to a table with more details.

Scroll down.

In the Assignment row, notice that all of the assignment attributes are available as conditions. In the defaulting column the attributes you’re using aren’t listed as unsupported. And since we’re not performing validation, we don’t need to worry that validation isn’t supported here.

You’ve completed your review of the Visual Builder Studio documentation.

Thanks for watching!
