Creating meta tagging rules

Oracle Eloqua can automatically generate page tags by extracting information from your web site's metadata. Metadata is contained in <meta> tags. This data is not seen by visitors to your web site but can be used by browsers, search engines, or other web services.

Oracle Eloqua can use metadata to generate page tags. After metadata is extracted and pages are tagged, you can use the tags for quick reference, tracking, or reporting visitor activity. Learn more about how to use page tags.

Oracle Eloqua can extract metadata from <meta> tags with http-equiv or name attributes. The following example shows metadata from a web page:

If configured to extract all of this metadata, Oracle Eloqua would generate the following page tags and tag this page with them:

text/html, charset=utf-8, marketing automation, demand generation, pricing, high value content, Enterprise Edition, whitepaper, eBook, knowledgebase article

Before you begin:

  • Meta tagging rules rely on your organization's site map. The site map is a hierarchy of your organization’s landing pages and tracked pages that have been visited at least once. Only pages in the site map can be tagged with your page tags.
  • Meta tagging rules are run daily. However, when a page is added to or removed from the page tag depends on your site map update schedule. Learn more about scheduling site map updates.

To create a meta tagging rule:

  1. Navigate to Assets An image of the Assets icon, which is represented by a black pencil. > Website Setup, then click Page Tagging.
  2. Click Page Tagging, then click New Meta Tagging Rule.

  3. Give the meta tagging rule a descriptive name and choose a folder for the generated page tags.

  4. Specify the Base URL for the rule. Oracle Eloqua reads pages at this level and below.
  5. In the Levels Down from Selected Folder to Tag Pages field, indicate how many levels from the Base URL will have this meta tagging rule applied. The default is 1, meaning the meta tags tagging occurs at the root level and the next level down.
    • To change the number of levels, select Define Number of Levels Down and type in the number of levels.
    • To tag all levels down from the Base URL, select Tag All Levels Down.

    • If you want any new folders added to the site map included with this auto page tag rule, select Auto Select New Folders. If the folder’s parent is not checked the new child folders will not be auto selected

  6. Specify the metadata tags you wish to extract from.

    • If your HTML code includes keyword metadata (<meta name="keywords" content="keyword 1,keyword 2">), select Standard. Oracle Eloqua will extract all keywords from the corresponding content attribute.
    • If you want to extract from other metadata, select the Custom check box and enter the value of the name attribute or the http-equiv attribute. Oracle Eloqua will extract values from the corresponding content attribute. Separate multiple attribute values with a comma.

    For example, to extract page tags from this metadata <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">, specify content-type. To extract from this metadata <meta name="custom" content="pricing, high value content, Enterprise Edition">, specify custom.

    Note: Oracle Eloqua only extracts from <meta> tags with the name or http-equiv attributes.

  7. Select Show Tree View to display a list of web pages.

    The pages that display are based on the number of levels you selected and your current site map. In the example below, there is only one level below the root. Both levels are automatically selected for tagging. You can then customize what pages are extracted from using check boxes.

    Note: The site map only includes pages that have been visited since the last time the site map was generated. If a page does not appear in the site map, review the site map troubleshooting.

  8. Click Extract Meta Tags and click OK when prompted.

  9. Click Save to save your meta tagging rule.

Manually run the meta tagging rule

Meta tagging rules run daily. However, when a page is added to or removed from the page tag depends on your site map update schedule. Learn more about scheduling site map updates.

You can also run the rule manually.

To run the rule manually:

  1. Navigate to AssetsAn image of the Assets icon, which is represented by a black pencil. > Website Setup, then click Page Tagging.
  2. Click Page Tagging > Manage Meta Tagging Rules.
  3. Locate the rule you want to run and click Run Auto-Meta Tagging Rule.
