Create a journal entry
Create a journal entry to record balanced debits and credits in the general ledger. Select Menu, then select Accounting > Journal and open Journal entries.
Before you begin
You need permission to create journal entries. At least two posting accounts must exist, and the transaction date must fall in a period where you can post.
Create a journal entry
- Select Menu, then select Accounting > Journal, and then select Journal entries.
- Select Create journal entry.
- Enter a Journal entry purpose.
- Review the Transaction date and Posting period. Change them when needed.
- In Journal entry lines, select Add line.
- Select an Account and enter either a Debit or Credit amount. Optionally enter a description and select a person or company.
- Accept the line.
- Add at least one offsetting line. Continue until Total debits equals Total credits and Out of balance is zero.
- Optionally attach supporting files.
- Select Save as draft to keep the entry editable without submitting it, or select Submit to send it through the configured approval and posting process.
The journal entry opens with its assigned ID and status. When approval is disabled or automatic approval applies, a submitted entry posts to the general ledger immediately.
